Depends if the standing 8 count is in effect, generally it isn't in the pro game in Britain.

To be honest, I'd rather see more standing 8 counts (particularly in the UK) instead of fights being waved off right away leaving the feeling that it was premature.

Yes, if he feels that the ropes are holding him up or stopped him going down from a legit punch then he will administer a 8 count

My problem with IJL's performance wasn't whether the stoppage was valid or not, it was the lack of conviction in stopping it. Half jumping in to stop it, then decides maybe he can go on and backs off, before realising he's already stepped in so needs to stop it. You could argue the stoppage was a smidge early, but Rose/Maciel and Brook/Jones 2 were worse.

Hardly the worst stoppage ever...Rose was probably about to get totally wiped out. It's just unfortunate it's IJL Again

Having seen the stoppage I don't think it was premature, if it was the other way round there would be no complaints. Rose was shook up and clearly wasn't defending himself, fair stoppage IMO.

Rose choose to (or was buzzed to the point of lacking the sense) not to take a knee. I think the ref made a fair call. Nothing more dangerous in boxing than a courageous ref...

My initial feelings where that it was a tad premature, but that could be influenced by IJL being so semi-committal that his stoppages always seem more questionable. Plus he has history.

By the look of the posts on here I could do with watching again though.

Stoppage was early IMO but I can see his reasoning. you've got to give the fighters more of a chance than that though.

Hagler hearns lasts approximately 6 seconds with IJL in charge.

Joke stoppage and the way he jumped in, then backed off then jumped in again shows poor decision making.

    It was early imo.

If you want "safety first" and more just technical boxing then we have amateur boxing for that.

In that situation, the attacking fighter can punch themselves out anyway. It could also end quickly by brutal KO to be sure, but you can't just assume how a fight will play out.

...and tommy's speech might not be so slurred. it's a different world now, with only 12 rounds and greater awareness of head trauma. there was a strong lobby to get boxing banned after the watson and mclennan tragedies, boxing may not be so spectacular, but it is safer.

Safer yes, but all contact sport is very high risk. It's a fine balance. Personally I have no problem with the decision.

Is there a chance Rose is the victim of a slip? Look around 2.22 on the sky video. He takes the right hand and is wobbled. Jones moves in and tries to follow up and Jones tries to hold on to him - nothing lands in close. Rose backs of and Jones throws several punches with two landing Rose moves away again and his legs seem to slip on the canvas Jones throws a few punches and lands two shots which Jones seems to take OK.

its early for me but after the big punch he does take another maybe 4 punches although I think Jones blocks a lot of what's thrown.
