I thought the production was average and Laila was indeed useless and frankly, dull. However she adds the female perspective and that can't be too bad of thing. Smoger was good and a smrt addition in my opinion. Albert and SRL weren't awful but they left something to be desired. Surely there's a better team than these two. All in all though it was a good night for boxing. If I were a fighter ( outside of a select few ) the NBC platform would be my goal. Surely they have lots of dough to throw around, on free TV to boot to build a ( large ) fanbase. I'm excited.
at the end of the day its the fighters and fights that are going to keep PBC interesting and on the air. if the fighters like Molina don't commit to making action then we can see PBC not lasting long BUT Thurman vs Guerrero defintiely saved it. The fight was fun to watch. If there are more fights that to come then PBC will be around for a long time
They need to stop having club fighters like Broner and Molina on TV, or at least inform the public these two are club fighters. I know how easily some of you get brainwashed.
Molina looked llike absolute sh!t. Broner looked good because Molina looked liked sh!t. Didnt throw anything. Once Thurman steps it up on competition, he dont KO for life anymore. I hope this is not the best card. Laila Ali was terrible and the commentating lacks. The commecials are annoying
I enjoyed the fights but I didn't like the production, the stage looked like something from a talent show and I don't like how the fighters do not have entrance music. The commentary was meh.
Production values were quite good ,considering NBC has been out of the boxing biz for awhile.Commentators were poor and need lots of work.Matchmaking,as usual with Haymon fights were awful and thank goodness that Guerrero made the night with his gutsy effort. All in all a nice effort but only a B- in entertainment value. They have a long way to go.
The ring walks need to be revisited, solo ring walks without seconds and walk in music is bullsh*t. The commentators need to practice. Literally, watch fights, take notes, learn to do this well.
agreed on marv albert, he should stick to basketball. They should bring other guys in. The walk ins, in think, were a bit cheesy... i would've preferred the normal walks in that you see on normal fights. a decent start but replacing the announcing team and less cheesy walk ins would be an improvement. as far as fights go, decent fights but keep in mind, camera work and announcing team have an impact. I believe if HBO or Showtime announcers would've called these two fights, with better entrances and camera work, i think it would've been more exciting. Having said this, Molina sucked; Thurman/Guerrero was good.
Having the fighters ringwalk solo definitely seemed..... odd. Camera work, gfx, etc were great. Commentating was so-so, it wasn't annoying so it doesn't bother me. Contrary to some posters, I thought Laila Ali did a good job - and having lots of staff so they could get summaries of what went on in the corner worked well. Since having ads means rarely seeing the corner between rounds, it was good to get a synopsis. Smoger of course was a class act, honestly I think he should have a bigger role. If you ever hear him on radio interviews you know he is an all-around knowledgeable and entertaining guy, hopefully they find a bigger role for him in the future. Not mentioning any sanctioning bodies or showing belts was... interesting. Not quite disturbing, because it would have just been underbelts. Lets see how they handle Quillin-Lee WBO title bout before jumping to conclusions.
Marv Albert was terrible. At least get someone who has actually seen a few fights and is at least familiar with the current crop of fighters.
Well for their debut telecast, the first in almost 3 decades, I thought it went terrifically. As far as the announcer team, I think they just need some time together to develop that "on-air chemistry." Albert is a pretty good play by play guy for basketball (he was the announcer for my beloved Knicks for over 30 years,) so hopefully it'll translate into the boxing world. SRL did better than Albert, but he needs some time to get seasoned as well. It would also be nice to hear Farhood speaking when they show his unofficial scorecards so that he can provide some meaningful conversation to the table. If they couldn't pry away guys like Bernstein, Paulie, Kellerman, Merchant etc., I wouldn't mind someone like Joe Tessitore or Bob Papa (late night HBO guy,) as the main play by play announcer if it looks like Albert isn't improving in the next few events. The actual production looked great. I liked the idea of giving a quick 2 minute storyline to the fighters. I also really liked the fighters coming out on their own to the ring and not causing excessive ring walk delays that are commonly seen on Show/HBO. Awesome initial debut. I imagine they'll make some tweaks, and I expect their April show to be terrific with Garcia-Peterson and Lee-Quillin. I really hope free network television takes over the reigns in boxing. It'll make this sport so much more mainstream and make a lot of these fighters household names like they were in the 70's and 80's.
It reminded me of like a play station game or something strange feel to it. If they get the fighters fighting often though I won't care
:good:good Why, oh why did stations feel that they MUST have a female report of some sort. It's sicking. As fans we want the beat....Tarver would have been better.
