In common usage in English, in the context of boxing, "at 175lbs" means "under the light heavyweight 175lb limit". Technically yes, the wrong preposition, but everybody knows what's meant.
Jeff Clarke boxed under 175 just about his full career. He defeated Sam Langford, Joe Jeanette-spotted him over two stone-Kid Norfolk, Luther McCarty, Battling Levinsky, Peter Maher, Battling Jim Johnson, drew with McVea and Wills; all while under the 175 limit. The series with Norfolk went the Kid's way only because he had ten years on the Joplin Ghost. Clark fought a lot and lost his share but also defeated a pile more good fighters. My pitch for him.
Eloquently put as always, but an argument for Clark at HW rather than LHW as far as this list goes. Getting a bad feeling about that though.
McGrain, what's your opinion of Pastrano and Eddie Mustapha and their potential not being realized. I think that their title winning performances were indications of how they could have been, had they been more dedicated.
Well I thought Pastrano got a hiding in his title effort. I think I had it 10-5. Where I think he gets really overlooked is one up. The draw with Moore, victories over Joey Maxim, Rex Layne, John Holman, Brian London it's really impressive and he doesn't get credit for it.
Yes,...those were very good victories for Willie, and the Johnson decision is still hotly debated (by those who actually know who the two contestants were that is)... do you think that Eddie Mustafa's ill concieved foray into the heavyweight divsion for that farce of a fight vs Renaldo Snipes ruined him as a lightheavyweight? I mean, the performance and the beating he gave Marvin Johnson was soooo impressive, and he looked great in stopping Jerry Martin, but he was never the same again after going up in weight and then coming back down again.
Nope, you didn't. There have never been a professional light heavyweight sporting the surname "Monzon" (barring two obscure fellows with losing records, understandably excluding them from mention in a top 50) http://boxrec.com/search.php?status=all&cat=boxer&first_name=&last_name=Monzon&submit=Go&pageID=177
Mauro Mina http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=10845&cat=boxer Some very nice wins over Hank, Cotton, a young Foster, Towne, and a few others. Think I'd rank him above Knight, based on the names on his resume.
Not a bad effort. Tunney has 2 or 3 wins over Greb depending on the source and a win over Loguhran. Tunney should be tier 1. Maxim is over rated. Kovalev has many fights left, but I would rate him higher. Jack O'Brien or Joe Choynski deserve a look
