Hello all, recently new to the sport of boxing, I love it. I wanted to ask some advice from those who know infinitely more than me... I am currently being coached to take part in a white collar event later in the year. My trainer always observes me sparring so that he can correct my mistakes and help me work on my technique. One of his main pieces of advice with regards to my technique is that due to my relatively short reach/height I am often open to punches when 'fighting on the outside' and has commented that my style/technique lends itself much more to 'fighting on the inside' and negating those with longer reaches than myself (most people). can anyone suggest some fighters, and possibly put up some youtube links of boxers who's signature style is 'inside fighting', so that I may study them and hopefully observe the manner in which they perform their skills. Thanks in advance terrier
... had my bell rung a couple of times, that was through being relatively new. My reach is quite short and most people I have sparred against are taller than me. so they tend to take advantage of the fact that I am in range and they are not.... so back to my post, any inside fighter suggestions?
Roberto Duran is the first one to come to mind. JC Chavez was a master at cutting of the ring and crowding his opponents (just as important for an inside fighter as actually fighting on the inside, if you cant get there you wont be able to do any harm) before he bruised them up with combinations on the inside. I would start with him, the fight against Rosario is a good one. Hatton was really good at closing the gap. Of the big guys Frazier was probably the best.
I like to study Ricky Hatton, great footwork and great punching combinations. And i whould reccomand you do a lot of endurance training, being mostly outside fighter, thare is nothing i like more then to see inside fighter gass out on me
Great pressure fighting requires more skill than fighting from the outside, due to the risk involved. If I were you, I would watch all the greats, such as Jack Dempsey, Henry Armstrong, Rocky Marciano, Roberto Duran, Chavez Sr., and Mike Tyson. There is a time and place for various types of defenses, especially if you want to give your opponent different looks. The key is to always move and the counters will start coming naturally.
