I realise Tyrell's pro career ultimately came up short. Has anyone got memories/ or a perspective on his amateur career/anyone see him fight early on in that career ? He was US superhw amateur champ 1981 and 82 World champ 82 Olympic champ 84.
Titan / yes you are right.I wasn't sure if people would've agreed with that..but yes...a low blow that put Tyrell down in round 3 was ruled as legitimate and Stevenson got the nod.Biggs had won the first 2 rounds.Annoys me when people say he only won the Olympics because the Cuban and Soviets weren't there. He beat Lennox (world ranked 7) in the quarter final..an eastern european guy ,who's name i forget (ranked 5) and In the final he beat Damiani (ranked 1)...Tyrell also won the 82 world championships.
I think Tyrell Biggs had he been able to keep his head in the right place had the tools to be a tremendous pro. The drugs did him in.. not only do drugs effect one physically but mentally its very hard to rebound from drug addiction and get you're mind and body back to a state where you can perform at you're full potential in a tough sport like boxing....
Heizenburg/ they certainly didnt help. Ive studied his career in depth and he lacked power. Also i basically think he was too nice a guy...just didn't have the required mentality. Hell of a boxer though until the Duva's tried to turn him into a fighter.
Titan/ yes..after his pro debut he was booed and hit the drugs badly/went into rehab and emerged determind to make things right. There was a meeting between Tyrell/his father/The Duva's/George Benton at which it was decided that they would 'teach him how to fight'...mistake in my view, that's why Biggs got into those wars against the likes of David Bey and Snipes, fighters who he should've just been outboxing. The first round with Tyson was what couldve been although i doubt he wouldve beaten Mike...he just wasn't powerful enough against the big guys...his fight with Bowe summed it up..Tyrell threw everything into that but Bowe was just too strong and durable.Bowe also had a similar reach which denied Ty any superiority over control of distance and ring position. The Duva's sensed Tyrell wasn't gonna be champ with Tyson around so they got him to the big pay off as soon as they could...also gave him some crazy advice along the way and in that fight in particular. I don't think things would've been drastically different but if Ty had been encouraged to build on his boxing and movement rather than learning how to get into wars, he may have had a slightly better career.
