Woods said that Roid's head shots didn't really hurt him. He did rate him very highly though. The hardest puncher he said he fought was Ole Klemtsen and another guy whose name escapes me. Klemetsen, like Kovalev, had that serious heavy handed power. In 2002 Roy Jones Jr was at the peak of his powers; a former three-weight world champion who had dazzled all in his path for over ten years. Although conceding he was out of his depth Clinton strongly questions both his own preparation for his biggest fight and Jones own training methods. I wasnt ready for him at that stage, my camp was terrible. We went to Jamaica for sparring and the two opponents were ****e. I also didn't like the venue. Why do you think we fought in Portland? It was a state where they had no drug testing. Im not saying I would have won either way; I was ****. The Yorkshireman continues- It turned into a holiday over there. I never imagined making the money I got for that fight. I was out there for three weeks and enjoyed myself and the occasion. He hurt me a bit to the body but never to the head.
Klemetsen, who is one of only two fighters to drop Woods, came over to the UK and flattened one of our best LHWs at the time Crawford Ashely, who was a good fighter and a banger himself. Brutal KO. Ashley didn't even remember what happened during his post-fight interview in his dressing room. [YT]vy7XU1qjvp8[/YT] Ashley also lost to Woods as well but Woods didn't have it easy. He hit me with a right in the first and it smashed my nose...it was one of the only times in my career where I thought I may have been out of my depth but I got back to the corner and I just got told to go after him. It wasnt classy (the way Woods boxed) but I kept the pressure on him and ground him down. His face a mask of blood for most of the fight, the challenger fought hard and by the eighth an exhausted Ashley was pulled out by his corner.
No doubt that Kovalev has great power in his hands but what good does it do if you cant land it? Roy wins this, much faster, better footwork for a mile, and he had pop in his punches as well and we saw that Kovalev doesnt have a granite chin. He can be hurt.. We aint talking about Agnew, Cleverly or 50 year old Hopkins here.
That was a ridiculous shot. Like you said earlier there are different kinds of power, Kovalev has more brute force for sure, probably a harder puncher than Jones, but to say Jones wasn't a puncher at LHW because of boxrec stats is laughable.
Roy could definitely punch hard. However, Kovalev's power is absolutely savage. If Kovalev landed half the amount of flush punches on his opponents as Roy did in a lot of his fights at 175 the results would be seriously ugly. Ugly like life ending ugly.
Kovalev has the power to kill someone for sure. Which is why I totally agree with the Pascal stoppage, you just never know when one punch is one too many.
