Why didn't Mayweather give Ortiz a re-match?

This is your original post. That's a whole lot of complementing for thinking that he lost the round. My error of interpretation. Apologies.

 

In the end, I'm glad you're talking about it. It was one of the most famous controversial outcomes in recent boxing history so it warrants some notable place, good or bad, in our minds. And while my being there in person brings rose colored memories (great undercard too), I actually find it a great fight to show someone who doesn't know anything about or watch any boxing because it was a high action 4 rounds, it was only 4 rounds so they don't have to commit long viewing time, and had the crazy ending to discuss.

Mayweather moved up to 154 to fight Cotto, who himself had just headlined a PPV in the high profile (but in my opinion, meaningless) rematch with Margarito. Cotto was unanimously loved at the time (funny how that has changed in just the couple years since) and the majority of posters and every publication ranked him #1 at 154. Mayweather had announced he'd fight either Alvarez or Cotto that December 2011, if I remember correctly, and the fans were outraged that he'd face the youngster Alvarez over the #1 ranked vet in Cotto. He signed to fight Cotto. Nobody preferred a rematch with Ortiz.

As for Ortiz, he blew that idea to the winds after his next bout (supposed to be a Berto rematch until Berto tested positive for PED's) against Josesito ended with him getting his jaw shattered after a mini-war and being shelved from the ring for almost 2 years. And then Luis Collazo happened too. I've always been a big Ortiz fan but it is tough to defend some of his deficiencies (even if I am quick to point out the undue hatred he often gets).

Yeah, so many protests were going on for a rematch, Mayweather couldn't handle that insane pressure and went for other opponents instead. I mean, Ortiz was on the verge of stopping Mayweather, why give someone like that a rematch?
