Shavers beat Ali, they just robbed him.

 

Is there any coverage of his loss to Standler and the Young fights ?

 

I feel Shavers is underrated by some... He had some bad losses but I feel he really came into his own later in his career. At the time he faced Ali, Holmes, Norton I feel he was a real solid contender, I'd favor him over some fighters who won championships.

 

Nah, disagree. No robbery. It was a close fight, Ali won it with that flurry in the last round. Just because Shavers landed the more damaging punches doesnt mean he won.

 

Oh...so it's better to land non-damaging punches?

 

No... but there comes a point where you have to value quantity over quality, Shavers obviously landed those huge right hands that everybody remembers, but i still think Ali won more rounds. And Ali's flurry in the last round verifies my opinion that Ali won a close fight.

 

If only Shavers didn't swing for the fences after decking Holmes in their 2nd fight and tried to set him up for another big shot he might've won the title that night. Imagine if he went after him Louis like after the knockdown. I remember screaming at the TV/Shavers because he got so wild instead of setting Larry up but such is the nature of the beast I guess. Always fun watching Shavers fight.

 

Shavers was and is a classy guy...I admire him a lot.

 

Shavers was unlucky but he wasted his time/talent to lots bum .
( I think this is the reason why he is in the Briggs category.)
Maybe the big ko list sounds well but i think this is just about the brainwash.
Some re****ed boxing journalist can say this ko percentage means something.
The ko percentage is a big nothing and this stupid ko mania is bad for the boxing.

 

Shavers did not drop Ali at any point. Rattled his bones with several rights, but never knocked him down.

 

Most of the punches I seen Ali throw had little power and were hitting gloves majority of the time. It seemed like he knew if he just threw combinations, didn't mattered if they actually landed then he could get a decision. It looked like he didn't realize until too late that he could actually hurt Shavers if he landed with some power but Im sure getting hitting by Shavers right hands didn't encourage him to come at Shavers and stay in his power range often. By Ali's own account Shavers is the hardest puncher he had ever faced and that speaks volumes to how hard Shavers really hit.

I still like Shavers clean power shots over Ali's combinations against the gloves but that's just my opinion I can see your view

 

He may have been referring to the few occasions Ali flew against the ropes and technically should have been a knockdown or just confusing it with the Holmes-Shavers fight.

 

Yes, Ali's punches on the gloves, round after round, except the 15th.
