Boring, would rather watch Hopkins than Frankie Gavin. I watched his fight whilst in the gym, didnt get much done. Put on the Rocky soundtrack and started banging out the reps lol.
I don't know too much about Gavin so may be well off the mark, but didn't he used to fight at a much lower weight? I've heard about the rumoured "commitment" issues with training and diet and just doesn't look right at the weight. Is he fighting up there because he can't/wont get down to where he should be?
He was about exciting as the poster on here named 'impacted' Must be the most boring ****er posting on any forum
Im afraid this is correct. That well trundled out word "talent" has been used too much again with regards to Frankie. He wouldn't have got as far as he has without it,but he's not exactly Howard Winstone. He won't box any of the aforementioned unless they get a title and he gets lucky to be offered a voluntary. Brooks showing last night means Frankie won't get that fight either. He could even lose his next fight. Ive a feeling Van Heerden will give it his all and that might be too much.
And was put down in the fight before that. Carries his right hand too low, leans forward and exposes his chin. And the boxers you named earlier are as fast if not faster than he is,and would find it in the unlikely event he fought one of them. Bundu, possibly Gavin would have a reasonable chance with, but its 50 50,even with home advantage again. As said by someone else,he's achieved a lot,but is not a top 10 welter.
maybe he could look good against a come forward banger, who he could outbox, think algeiri vs provo. With his IBF rating he's probably going to be saved for a brook mandatory assuming he holds on to his belt
You could be right, mate, and I hope you are. But I don't think hell fight anybody TOO aggressive with ability, guys like Rios and Maidana. Don't think he'd do too well either, but thats just my opinion. Van Heerden is probably about the toughest they'll risk him with, and thats 50 50 for me. I think any hope of Brook went out the window last night. They were looking to see how he went after the injury, and I think he did better than anybody expected. Although Im not entirely convinced he'd beat everybody,Thurman definitely coming to mind,I think if Eddie dared to give Frankie a shot on the strength of a Van Heerden win even,he'd come in for some very serious stick.
Gavin just isn't an exciting fighter, but he's a good boxer. I'm looking forward to his next fight. It's a big step up again, and in his last step up he got dropped and beaten by Bundu. Van Heerden is just beneath world class. If Gavin wins, he might get a future title shot.
Whilst he was an excellent amateur it doesn't mean he was destined to be a great pro. He still fights like an amateur and it is utterly boring to watch.
This. I think that Gavin is still holding onto those 'glory days', but they're a long, long way away now. I mean he STILL uses his amateur coach ffs! Who even does that these days? I'm also beginning to think that although he has great skills, they are suited to the amateur game only, and that he may only be British level at most. His best performance BY A MILE was against Lomax. That Gavin (sure it was at 140) was awesome. I just think that Gavin feels that training it's self is 'commitment', but he really does lack commitment. He should've got himself out to the states years ago too, I mean who are his chief sparring partners? Amateurs or pro's?
surely Gavin could make 10 stone. i think he weighed in at 10st10lbs & he looked abit pudgy, with no definition. Wouldn't know he was a boxer from how he looks, he looked like he just come out the pub. I know everyones bodyshape is different but he didn't look like he'd put the hard graft in. Lets face it, at welterweight all of the top guys beat him, he lacks power at welterweight & you need that, with the talent level in that division.
