Just about everyone Oscar fought was better than him so "fighting the best" was easy, who's better than Floyd?
So basically what you're implying is: Oscar was a small fish in a big pond while Floyd is a big fish in a small pond.
Floyd ducked a prime Margarito, prime Cotto, Paul Williams, and he refuses to fight a MW.. Oscar fought the best MW of tha last 30 years, fought anyone and everyone. Peep this, some of Floyd's best wins are against some fighters Oscar barely gets credit for destroying years before Floyd fought them, such as Genaro Hernandez and Arturo Gatti... ...that's how much of a bad ass Oscar was.
Take Oscar's resume from 154 on down, substitute Oscar for Floyd and Floyd would still be undefeated.
Was Floyd vs Genaro or Gatti close fights? Floyd destroyed them without the size, weight and power advantage of Oscar De La Hoya.
it's easy to be in tough challenging fights when your talent and skill is equal to or below your rivals. Who has more talent and skill than Floyd?
Unfortunately that is not a fact... it's your opinion, and speculation. The facts are that Oscar fought or attempted to fight anyone the fans demanded. He took on all, prime, top p4p, gave up advantages to make fights happen, ducked no one, no excuses about purse splits, venues, drug testing, dates, nothing... he was a true badass in the ring. Floyd, as much as you like to think is greater, always had excuses why he couldn't fight someone, whether he said they weren't popular enough..lol, drug testing, glove sizes, size advantages, catch weights, retiring, vacations, or flat out refusals to challenge himself. Floyd is definitely not cut out of the same cloth De la hoya, Duran, Leonard, Robinson, and many of the ATG that continously sought to prove they deserved to be called the best by seeking to fight the best.
ODLH destroyed younger stronger versions of those fighters. Floyd beat them while he was prime and they were on their way out, having KO losses to ODLH already and losses to other fighters
No one really but: Doesn't that speak more for his less than stellar contemporaries and the mediocre era he's in?
I see what you're saying but it's strange to include Leonard in that list. I love SRL but he looked for every advantage he could get in making a fight happen.
SRL fought and beat prime versions of Duran, Benitez, Hearns, and he also fought Hagler after a 5 year retirement and at 160.
Oscar fought an undersized Genaro and Gatti they only moved up for th he money. Both of them actually thought they could beat the smaller Mayweather till they got in the ring with him and found out different
SRL admits himself he looked for every edge in making a fight. He has said in an interview that he made the second fight with Duran as quickly as possible after the first because he knew Duran would go back to Panema and blow up in weight and kill himself trying to get back down. He has also admitted that he waited for Hagler to look beatable before making the fight at 160. I still give him massive credit for getting in the ring with the guys he did, but it's silly to act like he wasn't looking for an edge.
Lol... Gatti stood no chance against Mayweather and he and we all knew it. FFS Gatti got a shot at Mayweather for beating Leija lol... Genaro was old and done as was Gatti... Sorry, but an shot fighter beating another shot fighter does not cry greatness. Btw Leija got a shot at Gatti for beating Bojado...lol
