I know there are many fans of his here and probably will come to attack me like pitbulls but...
I have never been that impressed with him. He should be easily beatable and I see too many fundamental flaws yet he has won titles and beaten tough opponents....Is it his durability...his heart and will....his conditioning...all of the above? On the surface he looks to be so average.

Does all the basics well with massive heart, fitness and dedication, but I do agree, really wanted hatton to fight him when hatton was in his prime thought it would of been a hell of a s****.

Very skilled fighter. Lovely jab with great timing. Works the body so well and has a left hook upstairs and downstairs that packs serious power. Can box on the backfoot and frontfoot and has decent defensive skills.

Overall an excellent fighter who has a stacked resume. Lost to the absolute elite guys but has beat many very good fighters.

He is one of the most calm and cerebral fighters of this era. There is absolutely nothing average about him. He has a terrific jab and world class left hook. His footwork and timing are also great.

If anything, he would've benefited from having a world class trainer from the beginning. Maybe then he wouldn't have had stamina issues, been much more dedicated to his craft and not been such a Left hand dominant fighter.

In that respect, he may have even under achieved....

His fitness is ****. In between fights he is a dough boy and during camp he eats mamma's home cooking.

A fight between Prime Cotto and Prime Hatton at 140lbs would not have been pleasant to watch. Cotto would've brutalised him.

I think it's a testament to Cotto that he improved himself so much under the tutelage of a decidedly average trainer. His development from 140 to 147 was stark.

    Massive credit to Cotto.

Huge Cotto fan here. Probably my favourite of this era.

He should not be holding the MW title, though. Fight GGG or step down. Fighting Geale, a guy GGG took apart? That is a joke. He is stalling, waiting for Canelo after Kirkland. Wouldn't mind seeing Kirkland derail that plan.

He great against average opponents, average against decent opponents and poor against superior opponents, so he's about average overall.

If he is just an "average" fighter then this era must be filled with ATG fighters.

I totally agree. He is holding the prestigious middleweight title hostage. But let's keep it real.....he is no middleweight but perhaps he feels that's where the money fights are for him. GGG would retire him so I don't blame for not taking that fight. The fans know who the best middleweight in the world is and I think Cotto does too!!!

I think he is/was a very good fighter and has been a real asset to the sport. He spent the first 6 or so years facing solid but unspectacular opposition, fighters who were moderately high risk for their financial/name value reward. Then 2007-on has been really impressive. The guy faced Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey, and Manny Pacquiao in a 16 month period. Then two and a half years later he faced Floyd Mayweather.

He has some technical/fundamental flaws like everyone out there (sucker for the uppercut, underdeveloped right hand) but overall, was one of the more skilled fighters on the world class level. Very good jab and body puncher, short accurate punches, was effective in both boxing and using the ring and also as a pressure fighter.

His chin, defense, speed, and stamina were okay to pretty good, never real top-notch. He was much more of a heavy-handed guy than a huge puncher that could do real damage with one shot (unless it was a perfect body punch). Even in the losses to Mayweather and Pacquiao, Floyd's nose was bloodied up as it was one of his more taxing fights physically, and Pacquiao looked like he got jumped by several guys during a post-fight interview.

I always thought he was a better fighter than Sergio Martinez, whom I always felt was overrated. There was a size difference and I thought that the size/style advantage would have been the difference if Martinez had been healthy (save me Sergio's claims about being healthy into the fight, he was not gonna admit to cheating the fans by coming in knowingly injured). Cotto was always the better fighter IMO, p4p speaking.

Cotto's a B+/A- fighter who has done very well for himself and had a HOF career. The whole "first PR fighter to win titles in 4 divisions" sounds better than it really is, you actually have to look at the circumstances, how many titles are around, whom he beat for the titles as opposed to Wilfred Benitez for his 3 titles. El Radar's achievements in less divisions is easily more impressive.
