By quiet, junior. The grown ups are talking boxing. Why don't you listen and learn something for a change.

I really enjoyed watching him as a JWW. He used to headline a good amount of shows when he was an up and coming prospect on HBO's boxing after dark.

One of the most vicious body punchers I can remember. He did well even when he ventured up to 147 lbs, but that Margarito fight took a good deal out of him. He just never seemed like the same fight after that match.

But kudos to him for resurrecting his career at his age. I thought he was close to done after getting beaten by Trout at MSG, but he's found a way to become a lineal champion.

Sure fire 1st ballot HOf'er and one of the best PR fighters ever. But he still falls quite short of being considered an ATG.

It's his timing combined with really solid fundamentals. He isn't a tremendous athlete in terms of speed or explosive movement, but he doesn't need that to be effective. He times his heavy jab well out if his peekaboo guard as he closes the distance, which opens up a host of opportunities for him offensively that he takes advantage of. He's one of the best body punchers of his generation and throws great combinations, even though his right hand has been inconsistent. His head movement also surprises fighters who think they're just in there with a come forward bully. And when he's fighting more offensively dangerous fighter than himself, Cotto shows excellent ring generalship and lateral movement. He's one of the most complete fighters out there today and it's amazing how many ups and downs his career has seen. If you told me he was going to give Mayweather one of his toughest fights while Pacquiao was pummeling him, I wouldn't have believed it. If you told me he was going to dethrone Martinez just after the Trout fight, I wouldn't be looking forward to it at all.

Excellent post. This was pretty much a near perfect ****ysis of his in ring ability. Cotto is definitely an A- calibre type fighter and like all fighters he has some fundamental flaws he has never addressed.I just wish he sorted out his damn stamina!!!!

I'm not entirely sure. He definitely likes his food!! I couldn't believe it when I saw him eating all that barbecue food during fight camp in one of the 24/7 episodes vs Margarito 2.

    Top level opponents beaten?

He's beaten faded or injured champs and ex champs or won vacant belts. He has had the most overrated career in recent boxing history.

He has a very good resume:

    Kelson Pinto (undefeated)
    Randall Bailey
    Ricardo Torres (undefeated)
    Pauli Malignaggi (undefeated)
Carlos Quintana (undefeated and handed P.Williams first loss).
    zab Judah
    Shane Mosley (2007 version)
    Joshua Clottey
    Yuri Foreman (undefeated)

For arguments sake, I've not included his "questionable" wins over Margarito or Martinez. In the absence of those names, his resume is still very healthy.

If you thought he beat Trout then you need to learn how to score a fight "No doubt".

Win lose or draw, he always gave a good account of himself and ducked nobody.

*GGG does not count as an outright duck.

you're the lineal champ, your mandatory is calling you out and so you fight the guy he destroyed in 3 rounds for far less money? that's a duck.

Bailey? He's a massive puncher but not very good.

Foreman was injured and a weak champion.

Do you think he genuinely beat Clottey? I had the African winning that fight. It's a good win if you think he actually won.

He struggled with Torres who I think we can agree wasn't really world class. He was a solid contender but nothing more.

Mosley and Zab were pretty faded at those points. Having had a last hurrah later on people seem to value his win over Mosley too much imo.

Quintana was a solid win. Paulie was a solid win but again neither of these are spectacular wins.

He's a had a good and well managed career but I just don't see him as the legendary fighter that his fans do.
