Pointless debate really as nobody will convince each other on this one.

Calzaghe is also way past his prime and I believe a prime Calzaghe beats a prime Hopkins but I won't get into an arguement over it as it's pointless.

    good post.
there's a good reason why calzaghe never fought hopkins in his prime.

Is there? Hopkins got cold feet at the last moment! Not a good reason, surely!

you mean hence the reason this fight happened when hopkins was 43 (i'm not british or american by the way).

if calzaghe is so superior you won't mind telling us which proven world class fighter calzaghe beat in his prime.

    i didn't think so...

calzaghe will be remembered as a fighter who could have been great if he wasn't so afraid to fight top fighters on the world stage. he never did, and that's why he'll never get rep points from anyone outside britain.

Sorry but it's getting tired now. Maybe it should be moved to the classic forum.

Hopkins has the style to beat Calzaghe. A prime version probably would have, but he wouldn't have been as cunning and experienced as this version was, and Calzaghe would have been more motivated, better prepared, faster and stronger. It would have been close!

Calzaghe won. Calzaghe proved himself the better man and the better fighter. That is all that got proved. The fight showed us nothing of the prime match up we missed out on.

Are you going to say that Calaghe would have beat a Prime Roy Jones if he beats him in the fall?

Nah. RJJ is real class. What I am saying is that the fight between Hopkins and Calzaghe proved who is the better fighter now and due to the two guys never actually fighting in their primes we shall never know who would have won. A good case can be made for both. Before the fight both set's of fans were sure thier man was going to win.

Don't forget - Hopkins backed out of their 1st potential match up years ago.
That's not Joe's fault. It's not Joe's fault that Hopkins randomly increased his demands and the fight fell through.
If any of you remember a sliver of info about the happenings 2000-2002 Calzaghe was going after Jones and Hopkins. Remember the website with Joe calling Jones a 'duck' (for ducking him). And then his taunts to Hopkins.

So, if Hopkins was willing to do the fight now and not willing then I don't see how that can be held against Joe. Scratch that.... it SHOULDN'T be held against Joe.
