Schmeling or Carnera: Who Fought Baer Better ?

The enigma that was Max Baer?

 

I think Schmeling did, and without the benefit of having Carnera's size. Schmeling methodically dug in after that first round and bothered Baer with his own right hands,,,and i would wager that he buzzed Baer a bit, whereas Carnera didn't all all. Primo did outbox Baer for stretches, but never hurt him.
Also, it took more effort for Baer to deck Schmeling, whereas he bounced Primo around like a rubber ball.
Baer tagged Schmeling much harder than he did Primo. I've always ben convinced that the1st kd was the best that Maxie scored over Carnera, and the giant, having hurt his ankle, was going down from shots that weren't as lethal as that 1st one. grazing, less than precise shots were able to deck Primo.

 

I think Schmeling looked in a worse way at the end of the fight, so I'll go for Carnera.

Truthfully, both of them did not do well. Baer had their measure.
Baer was a long-distance fighter, so I don't put much stock in the fact that he "lost rounds" or was "outboxed" for periods in the middle if these fights.

 

That, added to the cluminess of the affair, as at least wo of those kd's involved and ankle-hurt Carnera dragging Baer down with him...I think Carnera was actually benefitting from his ankle injury in a way, in that it sure didn't take much for the panicky giant to lurch the wrong way in getting away from Maxie, and losing his balance..with some of Primo's natural born wrestler's tendencies to emerge, in taking Baer down to the canvas with him.
I'll give Primo credit in forestalling the inevitable as long as he did before those rights started crashing again, but I don't think any of Baer's rights were as good as that first one....much like Johansson-Patterson l....that first right hand "bingo" did the trick, in an imprecise sort of way, and all those follow up kd's over Floyd were decidedly inferior.
I still think that Schmeling fought more purposeful fight and hit Baer harder and more effectively than Primo did Max. In the Schmeling fight, Maxie's best shots came at the very end, instead of at the beginning like vs Carnera. The right that ended it for Schmeling would have put Carnera's lights out for the count had a replica of it landed on Primo.
Hell, Max was truly an enigma...as I thing he could have put nearly everybody's lights out had he tried...except for the young Joe Louis.

 

Carnera did, he landed some solid right hand shots and worked pretty well with his jab. Schmeling only landed occasionally and never with full force. Carnera gave Baer a black eye and Baer walked out of the Schmeling fight unmarked.

 

Scheming fought the better fight. Twice he wobbled (slightly) Baer. I think in Round 4 for the first time. He just got worn down and. Got hammered in tenth. Carnera fight was never in doubt after first knockdown. The ankle was shot, Primo fought gamely but I don't think Max was in any trouble in that fight. Not that he was in much with Schmeling either.

 

Having a difficult time finding the clip myself it's a right hand that lifts Baer's lead foot slightly off canvas. Along the ropes. There are many different edits of this fight. However the other time he buzzes Baer is in the first round which I have found, it seems to be more of a balance shot towards the end of the round. But the punch def lands cleanly with some force behind it.
Schmeling does seem competitive according to the commentator stating that he wins the 3rd (on a foul), the 4th, 5th and 7th.
Baer fights awfully dirty in this fight. Many backhands, hitting on the break, and constant cuffing of the back neck to try and spin Schmeling.
