Let me start by saying that I'm a huge Wlad fan and used to bug Manny about his upcoming fights when I went to the Kronk. He looked awful against Jennings. No offensive inside game whatsoever. When the ref took the holding away from him, he had no inside defensive skills, either. Basically, no inside game at all. Inexcusable for a champion. I always thought he could still fight on the inside but got on by holding because it was safe, but when that went away, he didn't even try to defend himself. Unreal. His midrange game was ****. When the fight closed to this distance Jennings looked stronger and more game. His long game was weak. He pawed with the jab too much in the early goings and it had no effect on Jennings, certainly didn't set up the right. As the fight went on, he threw more right hands and 1-2's, but they were always sent at Jennings when he was in his guard and they mostly had little effect. When the right landed, it had no effect. Wlad's hands were slow. He had no real defense aside from using his legs or holding. He looked tired by the eighth round. He looked concerned when things started turning around in the eighth round. He finished strong, but it was a terrible performance for him. Where were the hooks? Where was the dynamic punching? People call him a robot, but when he was a prospect and contender, he was a fluid, dynamic puncher that mixed it up and could fight on the inside. In this fight, he was so robotic and one-dimensional that he struggled against a guy that was game, but very limited. This version of Wlad is ****, and if he fights other big men with good workrates, he will lose.
I dunno, Jennings had a lot of body movement and he still could not get around the jab for the most part. It was boring as hell but it looked like Wlad was able to contain Jennings with the pawing jab. It's hilarious, but that was basically all he needed to defeat Jennings, the ****ing jab at his vintage.
Give him a beak. The ref took away his security blanket. When he goes back to Germany and is allowed to hold excessively, we'll see him back to normal. It was probably the most entertaining Wlad fight ever though
I have said it for a long time. If a fighter put preasure on him and attacks with more than one punch at a time, he is i trouble. He has bad defence in those situations and his chin is way up. A Tyson or Frazier would have killed him, a prime Ali would have toyed with him.
I don't know why people are so caught off guard, this is the same Wlad that's been around for years now.
So many points. 1) Give Jennings a little credit. He really had the spirit to win. 2) Wlad's right hand was effective. He hurt Jennings with it. 3) He didn't throw the left hook or right hand often, but I think that was more to BJ than anything else.
No combos as always from wlad but jennings would be stopped by an accumulation of hard shots, wlad put one 4 punch combo in the last round. Looked shocking missing the left hook. And punched at the same height everytime, no wonder jennings saw them coming. That's another limitation, no body punching against high gaurded jennings - idiotic.
1) Wlad did throw combos a few times during the fight. 2) The guy is almost 6'7. He isn't going to go to the body because that brings him closer to being hit by his opponent.
Bro that's what's got me thinking, and why I posted this thread - I didn't believe the smack talk about Wlad, I remember watching his fights on youtube in 2005 when I was a kid. He was a big dynamic puncher and he had great legs and could really move and jam. I understand he's old, and I expect what we saw tonight was age catching up with him. What's got me scratching my head is why he wasn't able to adapt and start throwing uppercuts and hooks on the inside, hooks from midrange and pivoting more.
39 year old with almost 70 wins and a 20 + year career meets a young fresh guy, who happen to have longer reach and great athleticism/good punch/surprisingly strong jaw and beats him 10 round to 2. And everyone is losing their minds all of a sudden. I was waiting for this to happen, he has been around too long. He needs to lock the fights with fury and wilder, and retire. as an undisputed champ. I don't think he should wait for Joshua but he should definitely handle the other two big guys.
Why? He should break Joe Louis' record which he is only 7 fights away to tie. If it were you, would you quit when you have the chance to break a major boxing record while getting paid millions of dollars and being THE HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION OF THE WORLD?
