Think ur forgetting Carl (T-bay) Frampton in there even tho non of the Irish fans can bring themselves to admit it, it's obviously Carl is a "Northern Irish man" through and through

Even tho Conlon and Barnes both fought for Northern Ireland during the commonwealth games neither would ever consider themselves Northern Irish, quiet the opposite

Any chance the original poster could change the title to read "Paddy Barnes & Michael Conlan - future PRO stars"

Then we might be able to discuss their boxing skills and not their political or religious leanings?

How can someone not be from the UK when they are born in the UK? Just because they have taken citizenship in a different country doesn't mean they are then that nationality. Not every premier league footballer is English.

They have dual citizenship - British & Irish, from the UK and the ROI.

This thread was clearly created to cause trouble.

But both sides of the argument are correct in way, especially if you consider what happened with a kid we used to work with - Ryan Burnett.

Ryan boxed for Ireland and considers himself Irish. However, it is more than fair to refer to him as a UK fighter as he has BBBofC license and never applied for a BUI one.

What's to say other Belfast boxers won't do the same when they turn pro? Also, the Good Friday Agreement allowed people to consider themselves Irish, British or both. It did not transport Belfast out of the UK or render anyone living in the city any less of a UK citizen.

Calling Barnes and Conlon British is grossly incorrect, but there's a difference between Britain and the UK, although if you want to be an ****, you could argue that the British Isles includes NI still.

Tbh I find it quiet offensive that the Irish fans on here don't even acknowledge his heritage and The fact his is Northern Irish, he's from a British community in Belfast, he has nvr fought professionally in Ireland and if he ever does it's going to be purely due to infrastructure but the way he's talked about on here ud think he was born and raised in Limerick... I for one have no issue with supporting Ireland in many capacitys , I come from rugby family who always support Ireland and sing the Irish anthem during any rugby match but when this issue rears it's ugly head I cannot keep silent..

And I cannot see how calling Barnes and Conlon from the U.K being a disservice to them him any different to it being a disservice to Carl not acknowledging his own heritage

The only difference I see between the fighters in question is Carl openness to try and bridge a gap between communities where I'd nvr see that behaviour from Barnes or Conlon, some would say their behaviour is quiet opposite (I maybe wrg but that's how I see it)

Belfast is also part of the UK and the British Isles. It's not part of the Republic. Whether a person born in Belfast considers themselves Irish, British or Martian, they are still a citizen of the UK.

I actually support a united Ireland (have family from Athlone), but I also value facts over wishful thinking.

A lot of people on these forums would have you believe that everyone in the North except a few considers themselves Irish, but the sad reality is that it's unfortunately not true. The 2012 NI census found that those who consider themselves to be British are actually the majority.

Unless they have changed their post, the OP (while attempting to cause trouble) referred to the UK, not Great Britain, and therefore was actually correct. Barnes and Conlon are Irish, but there are also from the UK because of the current political system in place. I and many don't really agree with it, but it doesn't make it any less of a fact.

hardly wishful thinking by stating belfast is in Ireland... not the republic of Ireland... but 32 county Ireland.... idiot unionists like southpawolgy live on another planet if they think they dont live on the island of Ireland... the same eejits that cheer on the 32 county cricket and rugby teams that go solely by the name of Ireland... mate at the end of the day conlan and barnes are from republican areas in belfast...but they like all other boxers will try to make as much money as they can when they turn pro... so whatever route they take good luck to them:good

They won't end up like Stalker, im nearly sure of it. For two reasons, one being that both Barnes and Conlan are simply better fighters than Stalker and the second they both have styles which will translate well to the pros. Stalker was never going to be a top class pro given the way he fights and also because he has no power.
