Very underrated. I was impressed with Quartey at welterweight, he had the goods. Beats any welterweight today IMO.
I agree with this thread. Ike was a very underrated, but very skilled fighter. Great to watch. Excellent jab, tight defense, and great countering ability, especially in close. He was like an orthodox, WW version of Winky. To be completely honest, I'm a bit more impressed with a prime Ike than I am Winky.
Quartey beat Oscar, jabbed his head off and made him miss all night, and this was past his prime. His other achievements at 147 are thin on the ground, partly due to him being avoided but this isn't an accomplishment in itself. To be a true great he should have beat Vargas, maybe he was past prime at this time though. He arguably beat Forrest, but Vernon hasn't gone to get any special wins since then himself
A incredible fighter. I loved his high guard style and that Bazooka jab he didnt even need anything else in some fights he could just jab and jab and win fights on that alone. I think it was the Vince Phillips fight right before Phillips violently KOed Tszyu that Quartey ripped through him landing like 75 percent of his shots or something.
He had Malaria before the Delahoya fight and was seemingly past prime when he faced Hoya having looked bad in the previous fight. Malaria can truly destroy a man. I think pre-Malaria Quartey does better against Vargas
Ike was a better puncher and a tad quicker, but Winky's D and chin were better than Ike's imo. In a p4p matchup between the two, I think Wright beats him. As for Ike, he had some very good performances, e.g. the Phillips fight, the Carr fight, but he had his struggles too. He was having trouble with Espana before knocking him out late, and Lopez was on the precipice of toppling him, as was Oscar. I think Tito would have stopped him late, in a fight Ike might have been winning at the timeof the stoppage, and a fight with Mosley would have been a 50-50 affair imo. I agree wiht Samurai that he'd beat any welter today though.
The biasness you show against oscar is disgusting. The man took on the very best of his era in multiple weight classes, thats more than many fighters in hisory can say. Quartey was clearly in his welterweight prime when he fought oscar. Don't give me that 1 year 3 months layoff bullcrap. I had oscar beating Quartey. Oscar is my # 10 welterweight of all time. - You bring up the vargas fight, but this fight was above quarteys best weight, and this was after he had got through a war with de la hoya.
The Lopez fight was a farce, Lopez knocks him down twice granted.....but Quartey essentially won every other round besides the two knockdowns. The judges got blinded by the knockdowns.
Oscar beat a prime 147lb Ike Quartey. Deal with it. Quartey was not at his best weight when he fought vargas, and he did not look like the same fighter he did vs oscar IMO.
