Kirkland is bigger than GGG so if Cotto insists on continuing the duck Kirkland is plenty acceptable to me.
IMO Canelo picks Kirkland apart- yes, easily- on the way to a UD or TKO. I have thought for some time that Kirkland is fine as long as he is able to get his core and legs behind huge power shots, but often lacking when it comes to the straight shots needed to beat top tier technical fighters. To me he punches like a weightlifter who is too heavily muscled. This works just fine if your opponent is willing to pose for you, but not so well if they know to get out of the way. Canelo will tear him up with nice, crisp shots.
I like this fight a lot, it seems like a can't miss fight for action. I'd favor Alvarez to win but I think Kirkland has a better chance than he seems to be getting credit for. It would have probably helped if Kirkland had been a bit more active the past few years, but he's come off long layoffs before and done well so inactivity might not be as big of a factor. Alvarez probably ends up with a stoppage win but a Kirkland ko upset wouldn't be surprising either.
I'd put the house on Soto winning close but clear and losing a decision. Sucks there's no line for that.
This fight is quite interesting. While an easy Alvarez win will by no means suprise me, I think Kirkland is at his most vulnerable early in fights- and if Canelo can't get him out of there early Kirkland can turn into hell on wheels.....and Canelo himself will often do little more for the first couple of rounds at least than attempt to get a read on his opponent- and that may be a mistake here.
Buried on the undercard, non-televised, is a potentially very fun contest between Joshua Clottey and Jorge Silva. You'll remember Silva had a FOTY candidate when he drew with Yoshi Kamegai in 2012, and just a couple of months later gave Perro Angulo hell in a UD loss. He's on a pretty bad run of form the last two years (0-5, stopped thrice) but not a terrible opponent for Clottey to shake off some of his deeply set-in rust thirteen months removed from his mugging of Anthony Mundine.
Kirkland is not a one punch KO artist. He's strong and, excepT for the Ishida fight, takes a decent shot. It's going to be fun.
