Exactly plus I think Ikes the kinda of guy who loses focus sometimes. He took a 5 year layoff now hes taken a 1 and half year layoff. Hes schooling Phillips then gets lazy boom hes dropped and almost stopped. Agianst Lopez hes basically set in stone to fight DLH he probablly got caught looking ahead. Ike was a great fighter but hes very arogant.
I think he'd outbox Mosley pretty handily based on styles. I also agree that Ike would be outboxing Tito, though I'm not sure of the stoppage, unless he does the same bit as he did against De La Hoya and tries to get cute. I think Ike at his best was just as good in any category other than chin when compared with Winky, including defense, and I think he had better inside skills. When he decided to get wild and fight with his hands down as he did against Oscar, he left himself open. Winky's had his share of less than stellar performances as well.
Mosley would have a great chance though. Ike has always had problems late in fights and gos down Phillips,DLH,Lopez. Mosleys at his best the last 4 rounds.
No Suzie its the other way round, your a Delahoya nutthugger, Oscar shouldnt be n anyone top10 welterweights, which of the following do you disagree with: 1. Oscar didn't want to fight Quartey when first at 147 2. Then Quartey got malaria and looked poor in a draw against Lopez 3. Malaria is a crippling condition and few are ever the same after 4. Arrum told Quartey he couldn't sign other fights or he wouldn't get a shot at the 5. Arrum then put the fight off time and again telling Quartey he couldn't fight if he wanted the shot at Oscar. This being the biggest fight out there, Quartey agreed giving up his belt. When the fight happened Quartey had 16months of ring rust. 6. Delahoya outweighed Quartey weighing 160 on fight night and also having 3 inches in height on Quartey 7. Most have Quartey beating Oscar convicingly, we can make a serperate thread and poll about this if you want
I had it scored a draw so I'd beg to differ. My card: 114-114 Quartey winning rounds 1,3,4,5,6 and 9. Lopez winning rounds 2,8,10,11( 10-8 ) and 12. Round 7 even.
Quartey had been inactive when he fought DLH and looked it.He was slow as molasses and totally one-dimensional in that fight(which was for the most part...garbage) I still had him winning, but that says more about Oscar, who despite being clearly very good, has never made much of an impression on me as a true great.I suppose if you rate Oscar 10 of all-time it would be in your interest to pump up Quartey . Ike at his best was very good. Also very basic and methodical, but very effective at what he did.Despite having a great KO ratio i always found his power to be misleading. He wasn't usually a one-punch fighter. Nana Konadu was a better more dynamic version IMO.Fans of quartey should check him out.
Quartey was the goods, but he definitely got hit more than Wright did in his prime. I mean, after the Vasquez fight, Wright showcased the tighter D. Quartey could defend just as well as Winky when he put his mind to it, but like you said, he had his moments where he'd get wild. I think the way Tito will bring the fight to him, he'll force Ike into some wild exchanges, like Lopez did, then drop the detonator on him. Left hooks are Tito's meal ticket and Ike's open to them quite a bit when trading. About the Mosley-Quartey fight. I'm not sure. Mosley struggled with Forrest, but I think Quartey is a little more robotic than Forrest, and Mosley might be able to give him enough angles, staying out of harms way to snatch a win. Can see Ike winning it too though wiht his stiff jab and hard rights, so I'm not sure how it pans out.
I thought Quartey beat De La Hoya 115-114, and it's a shame that he gets overlooked so often. Personally, I think a prime Quartey at welterweight would win comfortably against Shane. Mosley always slipped the average jab well, but against elite jabbers who had a tight defense and implemented feints, Shane often seemed befuddled. Most people don't know this, but when Ike came out of retirement in 2005 and fought in Ghana, he took the fight for free. He basically just wanted to give his fans in Africa a treat while sharpening his skills. Quartey's a great fighter and it was wonderful seeing him earn that last big million dollar payday against Winky.
Just on the Ike-DLH fight, I had it scored a draw 114-114, but I thought it was about as bad as Oscar ever looked at welterweight. He may have come in at 160 on fightnight, but I'm not sure that was an advantage because he looked quite soft around the midrift. I wonder how hard he actually trained for that fight. And I agree with Mantequilla that it was a pretty garbage fight. 2 rounds were great, 10 were utter shite.
If i remember correctly, the commentators were stating how little Oscar prepared for such a big and dangerous fight due to the problems he was having with his ex, Shanna Molaker(?)
When Verno floored him with that right hand in the 9th i was scared he would not get up. that was a hard shot.
I'd believe it. Compare his body shape to his shape in his other welter matches. It was markedly different imo. His low punch output and lack of movement would also point towards it.
Oscar FOUGHT Ike Quartey at 147lb. Leonard's camp didnt want to fight hearns at first, but the fight still came off. same with lacy-calzaghe. I thought Quartey won 8 or 9 of the 12 rounds vs lopez. I had the fight scored 115-111 Quartey only that close because of the 2 knockdowns. Lopez was a dangerous fighter. Where is your source Quartey fought oscar with malaria ok Sweet Dude, politics are a part of the game. Oscar showed up out of shape, that evens it out What they weigh on fightnight is irrelevant, both made 147lb thats all that counts. Oscar weighing in extra defintley hurt more than helped him, everytime oscar weighs in heavy he looks soft and slower. His best performances have come when hes weighed in light. Wow 3 inches! that is so much!!! Quartey might as well just not even stepped in the ring with Giant oscar de la Hoya. Thats BS, people are split down the middle. Larry Merchant had oscar winning. ringside was split even. go ahead and make a thread, ill even toss in my card.
I can see Ike landing a lot of jabs on Trinidad, and even knocking him down early. Trinidad getting up, trying to break Quartey down with bodyshots and with Quartey's vulnerability to left hooks; Trinidad could definitely put him down. I'd favor Trinidad here, 60/40
