I think it was Eubank - Collins I that sparked my long time interest. Before that I believe I was more of a casual.
Bloody hell! Watched him at Aston villa leisure centre v the legendary pat cowbell in 86 or 87.my first ever live pro fight. It was leonard vhagler that year aswell. Totally hooked by that point. Massively fond memories of the Tipton terror
No one fight.I always wanted to box and when I did (amateur only) I looked up to the champions and contenders even more. Nigel Benn is the most exciting fighter ive ever seen, so anybody who grew up watching him got a good start.
I got "hooked" and wanted to have a bit of a go after watching Foreman-Frazier, Foreman-Ali etc. I used to stop up late as a nipper and watch them with my dad. We used to watch them in black and white then!
Boxing was forced on me as my dad was an ex pro but I remember buying oscar vs bhop in 2004 I was 14 and I used my pocket money
It was, but Ali/Foreman has now become 'the' fight as history is rewritten. Even Ali/FrazierI was only debatable the biggest ever, as those who call the Louis/Schemling rematch the biggest ever, have a great argument too.
Lewis VS Tyson, and then watching Fraudley take gold at the olympics meant I followed his career - soon realised he was a fraud but I loved watching the sport. And quickly became a huge Hatton and Calzaghe fan. It just becomes a bit of an addiction as there are so many variables and the sport is so unpredictable. Nothing is as pure or emotive as boxing once you're hooked.
As a kid I was a mega Nigel Benn fan! During my teen years I grew away from it and only watched the big fights. But the fight which brought me back into it was Gomez-Arthur, Gomez was like a man possessed that night! Big upset and a war!
I was at that fight - without looking it up '87 sounds about right. Fantastic atmosphere and Cowdell must have been one of the unluckiest fighters of all time to be around at the same time as Nelson and Sanchez.
