A simple question: Why is every Mayweather fight a PPV?

Because people will buy them.

 

Because people will buy them and it will bring in the most money

 

His cartoon character persona and beating De La Hoya and maintaining success whilst fighting mostly credible and exciting fighters.

 

Marketing!

Floyd's lack of character and despicable disposition coupled with his multiple felony assaults and disfuntional homelife are what is being sold and marketed to the dummies in this country.

His pensive, feather fisted and tedious boxing style is easily whitewashed by the spindoctors and admen that run things.

 

People are willing to pay. It's that simple.

While Floyd has some fights are that dull he does give us a little taste of excitement every now and then (hatton, cotto, maidana I, ortiz) and this probably keeps people hooked and coming back.

 

Because he is the cash cow. If it wasn't obvious, already.

 

everybody wants him to lose. Floyd got business sense but his resume/legacy is mediocre at best.

 

Pretty much. Although PPv in general is strangling the sport by restricting new fans.

 

Because people pay to see him lose. And he doesn't lose.

 

Because his box office.

 

His fights are on PPV because all Floyd and the Networks care about is quick, easy money. Having non-PPV fights can help you build up a big fan base and help spread boxing to the wider public. This however is a slow process and doesn't bring the huge pay days of PPV. There are enough hardcore and casual fans who will pay for PPV and earn Floyd and his like good money so they take it.

I can understand a boxer doing it. They have a short career and they may not really care to much about the state of boxing once they have retired so they have the mind set of milk the sport for all you can whilst they are in it. I don't understand why the promoters and networks do it though. The long term monetary viability of boxing should be of paramount concern to these guys. Unfortunately, they too, like the fighters, only look at the short term.

As for why do we keep paying for the PPV? I have no idea. I don't know why I do when I could just download it for free after the fight. Maybe it's habit, respect for the fighters/sport, wanting to watch a fight live.

 

I don't believe his fights ought to be PPV either but that's what happens when you divide opinion and aggrandize something out of proportion and associate it with grandiosity, the 0, the May Vinci Code, the Money Mayweather character... people will gladly pay for the spectacle if they don't know much about boxing except Floyd, Manny and Tyson etc and assume it is on a par with Matthysse-Provodnikov because of the glitter and tinsel around the fight... it's Mayweather who is fighting so it's meant to be PPV. It's hard to explain. Don't get me wrong his skills are unreal and a joy to watch, but there's very little excitement. With Maidana you'd think, that was worthwhile because I saw a struggle and adversity. Casuals probably expect that will happen in every Floyd fight and even if they know he's a defensive genius, they might miss it if they don't watch the next one, the hope...
