Am I the only one who thinks Floyd has gotten better?

The troubles Mayweather had against Judah for example, he wouldn't have now. He physically declines but gets smarter and smarter, though less and less willing to engage. In some ways he is better and in other ways not.

BTW, isn't he starting to sound (very slightly) punch-drunk in interviews? A few years ago he developed a consistent more gravelly and rasping tone in his voice, that gives the impression sometimes of him having a constant mild cold.

Now it seems a little bit worse.

 

defense and ring iq are as good as ever, combos and power are worse than ever.

 

I think the best Floyd is the Marquez version.

 

His ring IQ makes up for his physical declining.

 

Not necessarily better but definitely more tactically aware. He knows how to win rounds on the judges scorecards which he does by controlling the pace of the fight.

He's still fast and accurate, but definitely not as active as he used to be.

 

Kind of like Hopkins.

 

I think he's gotten more cerebral and economical to compensate for his physical decline. So in a way he has, yes.

But there is no way he is better overall than he was a decade ago.

 

He fight smarter now. I think 2010 and 09 he was the most complete. Not physical prime but the overall best versions

 

Thats like saying Micheal Jordan has gotten better in 98 because he improved on his jumper.

 

Since Castillo he hasn't really beaten an A level fighter.

Years ago he was beating Castillo and Corrales. Now he's beating Maidana washed up Pac and over hyped canelo.

Big difference.

 

His ring IQ is better because he has more experience. He needs to fight smarter because his opponents are bigger and stronger.

I think the best Floyd Mayweather was the 2005-2007 version.
The 130 version was amazing, as well as the 2009-2010 version.

 

Why was the 2005-2007 version the best? He fought and best up Gatti......

 

He's gotten smarter but not better. I truly think 2002-2006 was peak for him, he could throw with power, he moved a lot more quickly, he was happy to get in and throw combinations and he took a lot less punches back then.

Against Maidana, that sort of crude slugger, he took too much heat.
