Cutting off the ring- a lost art -who were the best?

    after watching the Floyd-Pac fight and the way Pac only had sporadic success, possibly once in cutting off the ring, I thought of some of the best I have seen at cutting off the ring and setting up a good shot of a series of punches and sometimes this was at the risk of getting hit.

    Marciano is not given much credit for this but he was able to do this without having exception speed or reach and he did so over some of the best boxers and inside fighters ever.

    Who else was very good at this lost skill?

    Foreman was the best hwt Ihave seen in this regard. He had a wide stride which allowed him to easily cut off opponents at the rings corners. He continually trapped Ali along the ropes and in corners quite easily in round 1 of their fight. From round 2 on Ali decided to fight primarily from the perimeter of the ring since he smartly realized he could not avoid being there. To be fair part of this was due to Foremans ability to cut off the ring but also due to the softness of the ring padding making it difficult and exhausting to move side to side.

    Lamotta was a cutie at cutting the ring off.its an art form and having the ring cut off you happens without you realizing.

    Nice shout. People frequently talk about how Ali "outboxed" George and how smart he was with the rope-a-dope; and sure Ali was smart, but the rope-a-dope was an emergency solution because he was unable to get away from George.

    It's not a lost art, there are boxers who can cut off the ring well at the moment. Kovalev and Golovkin are two prime examples.

    Conversely the pre exile dancing Ali would never have been there for Foreman to cut off. George would have been dizzy with the way Ali could change direction in the blink of an eye, whilst circling.

    Liston was no mug at cutting off the ring, and Ali mesmerised him with movement in their first fight, and I wouldn't put Foreman too far above Sonny in that department.
