Question, how do you guys avoid reaching with the right hand and also balancing moving and sitting on your punches? I have a problem with sitting on my punches, I feel as though I don't commit to them as much as I should. Do you do any drills or should I just focus more on that during bag work shadow boxing gym work etc

You avoid reaching with the right by understanding that your right foot determines distance, not your left. As to the rest, keep your feet under your shoulders.

    Great advice.

Work on just using your right hand for a while (maybe a few rounds each session). Two big things helped me improve my right hand:

    1. I broke my left hand and had it in a cast (so no real training or sweating allowed for like 4 months).

    2. I watched a lot of James Toney, and then I noticed how Floyd Mayweather was in position to throw his right hand almost 100% of the time against Mosley.

I started just playing around with the double end bag just using my right hand, and when I went back to the gym everybody I sparred with commented that they couldn't stop me from landing it (big difference from the previous times we had sparred). All about being in position to throw it.

thanks guys both great advice thanks so much

I like the thing about the right foot determining distance and not the back foot. Last night during sparring I did it again, throwing a jab and then leaping/reaching in with the damn right but I just read this so ill def work on it.

    thanks guys

if you step with the jab bring your right foot along for the ride. then fire the right. it will give you more distance on the right hand. also try and focus on snapping the right hand (quickness) instead of pushing it out there. try using it as a counter when someone is stepping in on you, by throwing a quick lead right. watch yourself in the mirror and see if you are able to release it straight from the chin, without any giveaway or telegraphing.

next point is a more general one and something that i often see with new guys. basically the problem is they always try and throw punches from too far out, either they are scared to get too close or they just don't know the proper punching range.
next time you spar try and stay close to the guy your working with, and when i mean close i mean in his face. uncomfortably close. every bone in your body will be tellling you to back off, to step backwards, but DONT. stay in his face keep your defense up and after a few seconds start throwing right hands. you will be surprised how easily it lands!!!

You can "cheat step" up with your right foot, too.

Instead of stepping forward with the left foot with the jab and dragging the right, take a short step forward with the right foot (not crossing it over in front of you, just slipping it forward a couple of inches under your hip/shoulder).

With enough practice you can even do this while throwing a jab to disguise it (the jab can come up short and probably will but if it gets his attention so he doesn't notice you've cheated your foot up it's served its purpose), or feint with the jab to do the same thing.

Your right foot should always be under your shoulder.

It's body position. Your arms are an extension of your body. Don't reach. Step in with your body and punch for rt. hand.

Agreed! Fighting with the right foot outside the arm pit effects balances and causes the head to come forward.
