Tough call - Monzon was great in long fights, possibly might be able to exploit any lackings in the 'engine' dept of GGG.
But GGG has better skills and more power IMO...

So we're comparing an alphabet title holder with an undisputed MW kingpin who's widely considered a top 5 P4P champion at MW and top 20 of all time?

I like Golovkin, but lets slow down a little bit. Monzon has a strong case of being the best fighter of the 1970's alongside Roberto Duran and Muhammad Ali.

Monzon is a legend whereas Golovkin is a promising MW with A LOT to prove still.

Not sure how you have formed the opinion GGG has better skills. He certainly hasnt fought the level of comp Monzon did. I think Monzon wins a decision. He would have Golovking eating the jab all night. He twicw beat Bennie Briscoe who's styly is similar to Golovkin with more head movement though. GGG is a tough customer, but threads like this expose the ignorance of most fans and their knowledge of boxing history. That statement is not pointed at you, but in general when threads like this come up.

I'll take the Monzon of '72 who tamed Bennie Briscoe to do the same. Carlos had the chin, awkward boxing style and punch to make Golovkin much less effective. Escopeta will put Gennady on his heels with that cross. He also had a versatile left which he could flick into a hook or uppercut, ideal for GGG's crouch. It would be exciting and hard fought but Monzon not only has the tools to survive but win. It would be the Kazakh who got taken into deep waters.

Hmm...arguably the greatest MW ever versus a guy who's beaten Geale and Murray. Is this site even for real?

I think Monzon might actually be underrated. He really could do it all. He could plant himself in the middle of the ring and hunt you down with thudding power punches if you tried to box him, or he could box your ears off with great combinations like he did to Valdez and Briscoe. One of my favs to watch. I like GGG, and he still has tons of potential despite his slightly advanced age, but it might be a little early to be putting him in fantasy fights against Carlos.
