Fights where nobody really cares who won?

Why do you feel differently? Either Floyd and Manny are ATGs or they're not. Floyd loudly boasts he's TBE, The Best Ever! How in the world is the best ever or even in the ballpark of established legends when his supposed best win, over the great Manny Pacquiao, was a fight that fans didn't deliver and left fans disappointed. To many people that fight cemented their belief that the 70s and 80s were way better than current boxing. Boxing had a chance to compete with those eras but Floyd vs Pac-Man disapointed and produced an OK fight, not a good fight, or even a great fight. But an OK fight. Maybe 2 stars out of 5, a C- grade. SRL vs Duran I was a 5 star fight. Big difference. Has Floyd had any 5 star fights that compare with that?

You compare Leonard vs Hagler to Floyd vs Pac-Man. Leonard entertained the crowd in an organic way while landing something known as combination punches. Yes combinations were something SRL, something that Floyd doesn't throw. Floyd tries to throw as few punches as possible and that's boring. SRL didn't do that, SRL wasn't afraid to lose, even though he lost to Duran, he still won because it was such a memorable fight. Floyd doesn't have that so I don't know how you can rate Floyd higher than Sugar Ray Leonard. Isn't how you connect to the crowd a pillar of being an ATG? Ali and SRL were showmen in an outside the ring.

Floyd brought this upon himself by proclaiming himself TBE, the best ever. That's the best...ever... Floyd didn't say TBN the best now, but Floyd said he the best ever.

Ali was known as the Greatest, but not the Greatest Ever. Saying you are the best ever says you are better than any boxer who ever lived which is extremely improbable and very egotistical and disrespectful to boxers from past eras. The Greatest was born when Ali beat Sonny Liston and he said "I must be the Greatest" because he beat Sonny Liston, who was known as the most feared boxers at that time. That worked there because to beat Sonny Liston you must be great and he became the Heavyweight Champion of the world so what could possibly be Greater than that?!

 

1. I don't rate boxers' greatness on excitement. Floyd and Manny are indeed ATGs.
2. I didn't make any comparisons.
3. Floyd doesn't bring anything on himself by calling himself TBE. You can't raise someone to a higher standard because of their confidence, ego, or marketing tool.

 

Fourth fight, you mean? Third fight was ultra-competitive.

 

True but they were already not the same fighters by fight #3. They had simply destroyed one another at a similar rate.

 

Well the problem with that argument is that far too fans on this site take it at face value that what he says is true. And whether or not he believes he's TBE, I think he's going to get scrutinized by us old timers, if he makes such a claim.

I've been watching boxing for about 40 years and I can think of 4-5 boxers who I've watched who I would certainly rate higher than him, and about another 4-5 who are in the ball park. Hell I even think Oscar in his prime would be a handful for Floyd and I've watched both fighters.

Now add that to the 1000's of fighters who fought before I was born (or old enough to watch boxing) and you can easily see that he's not even close to being TBE.

I mean hell you have a thread asking if 48-0 is something that will never be achieved again, yet someone like JCC was 87-0 before his first loss. Duran was 72-1, SRR had 100's of wins more than Floyd.

It's totally ridiculous. Besides it's not your "0" that matters, it's the level of comp you fought to keep that "0" that matters.

 

I completely disregard the 4th, was a blowout. The third fight they were both well on the downslide. They had both beat it out each other. Hence the slowdown and fight of the year.

Fair, but him calling himself TBE doesn't mean he is.
