Agreed. The fan man interruption was beneficial to BOTH fighters and probably more so Bowe than Evander. And I disagree that Tokyo Douglas would have beaten Holyfield. Throwing an uppercut while moving towards your opponent, leaving yourself open for a big right hand pretty much dismisses the notion that he was a highly skilled heavyweight who would have outboxed the real deal, even if he had entered the ring looking like a sculpted adonis ( something that Douglas never did anyway. )

 

I'd say fan man did benefit evander more, but not to the extent it's guaranteed he'd have lost without it.

 

Holyfield would have still outclassed and stopped him, Tokyo Douglas wouldn't have just laid down like a disgraced slob after the first big right hand counter.

 

Absolutely!! I think it's quite clear that Holyfield was breaking Bowe down and he had KO in his eyes. Bowe was starting to take a bit of a beating! I remember Holyfield saying back then that his back was tightening up a little so the rest allowed them to massage it some but I'm quite certain that his back wouldn't have prevented him from finishing off Bowe somewhere before the final bell. Bowe was tough as hell but this version of Holyfield in my eyes was one of the very best. Maybe the addition of Manny Stewart for this fight helped or maybe Bowe's constant trash talk in the months leading up fueled Evander, my guess would be both helped. Bowe was nasty to Holyfield in the months leading up to this fight. I know because I have many VHS tapes full of all the stops and interviews they did leading up to this fight. Some day I hope to transfer them to dvd and share them on YouTube with the world. That and my 30+ year boxing collection. I remember him calling Evander a gargoyle and telling him he was ugly. Telling him he was going to put speed knots on his giant head and on and on.


I realized after typing this that I never even answered the original question here.

Holyfield beats any and all versions of Buster Douglas. Like a few others said this Buster would make it a fight but he will still be broken by Holyfield at some point. My guess would be tko9.

 

no one could have ever beaten Douglas in Tokyo. The air and atmospheric conditions made him super human.

 

The only ever being stopped or knocked down in the Bowe trilogy was Evander Fields. Fact.

He never came close to finishing Bowe, even in the third encounter because Bowe got up and finished the show despite being borderline shot.

In the second fight Bowe had to deal with the fan man, his passed out pregnant wife and even a out of shape Bowe never ran out of gas, ever, and always came on in the latter rounds stronger which is a stark contrast to Holyfield who in almost every fight had to get his second wind. Most noobs are thinking his toe bouncing /dancing was some great boxing strategie but in reality he bought himself time to get a breather because he was dead tired.

PED Holyfield was never a conditioning monster and he was a PED abuser for most of his career IMO.

BTW, which skilled tall big heavyweight did he beat ? The best he got was a controversial draw courtesy of Don King.

His official record is 1-3-1.......by no means something to brag about.....and no Mercer, Rodriguez or fat Buster were /are not skilled big man.

Holyfield was consistantly never consistant in his career.....but I do believe he won the first Moorer match, despite the knock down they judged the round even , total BS.

 

Bowe had been having a very good round 7 when Fan Man came down.

Holyfield hurt Bowe late in round 5, and had a good round 6. Bowe did come back with a flurry late in the 6th, I think with about 30 seconds left.

Holyfield started off round 7 with some combos and Bowe countered back. Then Bowe controlled the next 40 or so seconds with his jab. He was having a lot of success with the jab when Fan Man came down.

We'll obviously never know what would have happened if not for Fan Man, but I don't think Holyfield was about to stop Bowe, as Bowe had come back strong late in round 6 and was winning the 7th when the interruption occurred.

 

One thing is for certain, Douglas wouldn't have stayed down in the third. For me its a different fight. I edge towards Holy but that version of Douglas was something else, that was one complete fighter. No way it would have finished that early with him in that kind of form.

 

Douglas was a career quitter. He came to fight like never before against Tyson. I still think Holyfield would beat him, Holy was one of the best counterpunchers ever. He would have always hit Douglas on the chin and make him think twice.

 

Alternatively, how about the Tokyo Tyson vs The Douglas who quit against Holy?

 

Tyson was still undefeated undisputed champion. I think he was fighting with the o sh*t attitude like this guy came to fight and Im not in shape. I think he would smoke the Douglas that Holyfield fought who basically quit when he got a bloody nose.
