    I'll admit, I never thought he would get in there with a beast like Kovalev. I made a few threads on it. I was certain that he wouldn't win if he did fight him, but the point remains, I didn't think he would do it. Hopkins sure as f* didn't have to fight Kovalev. People would've watched him pick off the Shumenov's of LHW until he was 52.

    Compare and contrast that with a guy like Miguel Cotto.

    Other than beating Sergio Martinez (call this win what you will, but Sergio was in steep decline), Cotto hasn't had big wins in half a decade. He CERTAINLY hasn't done s* at middleweight.

    He's criticizing the opposition of a man everyone sees as "the guy" at 160, then goes on to fight someone "the guy" KO'd in 3 rounds? You can't make this s* up. I can't wrap my head around how being a superstar at 140 means you can make HIDEOUS ducks that the public will defend.

    Cotto lost to Austin Trout. Cotto COULDN'T beat Austin f* Trout, is he even top 3 at 160? Cotto fans defending this: Miguel is playing the role of diva so he can afford his 5th mansion. Pay attention.

    Cotto will either fight Golovkin after Canelo or vacate assuming he wins

    And while I can't stand watching Hopkins fight, he really will fight anyone

    Nothing against BHOP but do think he should hang up the gloves and retire though...

    I also wasn't sure Hops would jump through the necessary hoops to fight Kovalev. Hopkins could have used plenty of excuses at the time to avoid that fight, instead he made it happen.

    At the end of the day hes still going to bed a multi millionaire, same as Cotto... only difference is he doesnt have to fool himself and excuse why he avoided his clearest rival.

    Hopkins is a legend imo

    That's what's commendable about what he did. The last few years of his career were "he seems to still be elite, but can he really hang with the very best?" to which he said, "let's f* find out".

    He couldn't, and because of that the new guys get more shine. Hopkins can walk away knowing he gave it his best against the best.

    Have to agree with OP. I don't like Hopkins, but he proved that he had ***** of steel by fighting Kovalev. The fact that he was older than dirt and that he managed to go the distance only adds to that prestige. Even if this guy rubs you up the wrong way, you have to tip a hat to his accomplishments.

    Why it take all this time for you to appreciate Hopkins' willingness to fight top opponents these last several years??? Of course Hopkins is tough as nails. His willingness to fight Dawson both times and Kovalev at his tender age was *****y indeed.

    My thoughts exactly. Im not a huge fan of Hopkins by any stretch of the imagination, but I greatly admire his willingness to fight anyone, particularly when his motivation is definitely not financial (he has been financially secure for well over a decade). One could argue that a large portion of his willingness to fight the best at his advanced age is simply ego... But then, aren't all atgs egotistical?

    Only Bhop would have taken on Kovalev when he did, it's a fight he didn't really need and could have easily swerved.

    Hopkins however, actually took up on the challenge willingly, and this is something you RARELY see in boxing, he deserves all the credit even if I'm not a particularly big fan of him as a boxer, the man's a true legend.

    His comments (particularly prior to the Calzaghe fight) were on the face of it disgusting. But I often wonder if Bernard (who is a boxing historian) was merely flipping Alan Minter's infamous comments prior to his fight with Marvin Hagler?

    he might have been trying to get under Calzaghe's skin, who knows

    it's common knowledge he's said racist comments, but I don't let that cloud my judgement over what he has shown in the ring all these years
