Good. Virgil hasn't shown me anything. Without Andre Ward, no one would've heard about him. Khan is an idiot who jumps from celeb trainer to celeb trainer. Probably Robert Garcia next for him.
Wow This might be the right move but damn thats cold Is this based on his comments about Hunter not allowing him to fight the way he wants?
Post a source or get banned. Too many sourceless comments the last few days. Also, who would Khan go to? He lacks a lot of what I term 'spatial awareness' and only controls the heads (vs the hands) of opponents that elite fighters like May and Pac do. He did some excellent body work and inside fighting against Algieri, and I thought he did what he had to do (oddly enough my thread deleted?). I think Hunter is an excellent trainer. The way he uses drills to instill a boxing sense is old school and much better than some random mittwork of Roach. I had said before the fight he looked out of shape (lovehandles) compard to Algieri's definition. Maybe he didn't think it was worth the hard conditioning for such an opponent.
There is no trainer that can help Khan. You can't train glass into granite. And no trainer has been able to get Khan to get rid of his amateur tendencies or tuck his glass chin when throwing punches.
Why do people put so much high expectation on trainers. Fighters fight with what nature equips them with. All the fighters that lost under Hunter lost because their opponents were better than them period. You could have Cus D'amato in Angulo's conner and he still would have lost to Canelo.
I think Virgil Hunter is a great trainer. Khan did good inside work his last fight, his footwork seemed better overall. I just think that no one expected that version of Chris Algeri to show up. He held his hands different, and he was more agressive.
I've seen some trainers take flawed fighters who were losing, put them back together and they were twice the fighter they were before. Example: Manny Stewart (sp?) when he fixed both Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko. Apologies, since I'm having a weird computer problem at the moment that won't let me go anywhere but this site or even search my old posts for names of trainers. But there was that guy who trained a couple of guys who beat Ali who was the better boxer.* Some trainers are also excellent tacticians and cornermen who can help their fighters beat guys they wouldn't normally beat. Example: Nacho Beristain. With Beristain training him Marquez beat Pacquiao twice. There have been a couple more who could do things like that such as Ray Arcel. Plus, there are clear examples of fighters and trainers having contrasting styles which don't work for each other. When Gil Clancy took over training George Foreman he worked on slowing George down, teaching him to pace himself so he wouldn't punch himself out like he did against Ali. The result was that instead of easily knocking out Young in the early rounds as he would have done formerly, he got outpointed. Angelo Dundee worked much better with Foreman in his comeback. Also, as I recall, Ali didn't like training with Archie Moore because Moore wanted Ali to fight like Moore. But Ali had his own speedy movement based dancing style and they clashed over it before Ali dropped him. Of course, it probably might have suited him better in the second half of Ali's career when he'd lost that lightning speed and had to do all that rope a dope stuff. *Eddie Futch
