And this is not to say that it is impossible for a new generation to surpass the ones that came before because they necessarily have to stand upon their shoulders is just silly. But all achievements must be looked at in the context of their era. If Andrea Rossi really has invented a cold fusion machine then that would put him up there as the greatest of his era and would rival Newton discovering the laws of gravity amongst other accomplishments... But to say that any mug with a masters in physics today is a greater scientist than Newton simply because they understand Quantum Physics and Newton did not is wrong in my opinion.

Justin gatlin has hot drugs on his toast and his biscuits.
I agree with what your saying but nostalgia as in where someone will slag off pacquiao for beating the best there is and ducking no one and going thru the divisions he did then sayin ah but Dempsey was an animal when in reality he never beat anyone in the same stratosphere as pac or achieved anywhere near.
Joe Louis was renowned for the bum a month, won the title off someone who was beaten 20 times before, but say tyson was awesome in his prime and u will get slated for mentioning them in the same breath.
Bert sugar was a world renowned expert, read what he says and tell me how,he could say audley Harrison was great and it would be far less ridiculous than 80% of what he did say that is taken as gospel

 Bert Sugar's a mug. But there is plenty of information out there that allows us to form our own opinions on who should rank where all time. Some if it is just much harder to find.

He's a nutter and it may well be a hoax but if it's not then it would be the most significant scientific advancement since...electricity?

Oh I quite agree, but that's not all I base my ATG rankings off of - particularly across eras.

There is agreed but state it and unless it conforms with common belief u will be slated.i have never met anyone that thinks srr can ever be surpassed.
He was ahead of his time, was an awesome fighter, beat legends of the sport, but would a fighter today get a pass for fighting 75% of his opposition,or if you look at his greatest wins and see certain other fighters beat them in and around the same time,it is completely ignored.im not dissing srr saying that but it's blasphemy to suggest it.
Ppl just aren't realists, especially when you can watch footage of say Marciano Louis even Liston and say they would be competitive with tyson,Lewis etc.
Liston is still regarded a legend, who did he beat ?
Ali was amazing, truly great but ppl go on about his great wins over Liston, how good quarry shavers etc were.they wer plodders,Chris Byrd would embarrass them and that's saying something.boxing has the biggest load of bull**** followers known to man.in a sport wer someone is regarded greater for avoiding challenges and keeping undefeated these days rather than someone who will fight upto the point it's thought of as suicide and lose and be so called found out,ha.i just have a buzz off ppl on here, moreso the ones that spend 30 years so called ****ysing boxin and thinking what they say is gospel.

The answer probably lies somewhere in the ranks of someone nowhere near as talented as the elite but is willing to go in with them on the way coming up taking an **** kicking every fight in the slight hope of winning and earning a few more quid for his next beating
