In the week that Lee Haskins wins the interim IBF World Bantamweight title find it a bit disrespectful & reflective of boxing today that the front cover of Boxing News this week has Chris Eubank Jnr.
He sells magazines. The average Joe is far more likely to know Eubank Jr than Haskins. Lee produced a brilliant win, but this is purely a business decision. Nothing to see here, move on.
Lee Haskins should be front cover but it's what sells. I think it's quite symbolic of how boxing is perceived by the fans and casuals. It's not a massive issue as long as they give Haskins a good spread.
You are absolutely right if the majority of purchasers/subscribers are "average Joes". I imagine the majority of the readership have an interest in boxing so would be less "seduced" by Eubank Jnr on the front cover. You're bang on that Eubank Jnr would attract the more casual fan but that isn't their primary market. Just think that the Boxing News team had more integrity than that.
Eubank is a completely unproven, over-hyped annoyance who gets treated like the British Roy Jones by the ridiculous British boxing media. It's starting to grate badly. He still gets spoken of as though he's some 20 year-old phenomenon, he's the same age as Billy Joe Saunders, and has achieved nothing like the same in his career.
Why would 'average Joes' buy boxing magazines? If you wanted to buy a boxing magazine, you'd be a fan of the sport. Seems more of a case of 'if your face fits..'
These things are decided at least couple of weeks in advance, maybe even longer. If they are doing an interview/feature on a fighter they do not do it a day or two before the issue is released. I will say Haskins deserves a lot more credit recognition than he has got though.
Are you forgetting Eubank Jr is WBA Middleweight interim champion? Its no big deal really, neither of them beat anyone decent to win it anyway.
At least Roy fought quality opposition. CEJ is known for not having a clue what to do for the first 6 rounds of his biggest fight, and failing to get out the same opponent for the last 6 rounds of the same fight. The lad is so overrated.
