I always wrestle with whether I should rate Paul Smith or Juan Manuel Marquez higher on my all time great list. :think It's a tough one, but Smigga usually comes out on top.

but whats happened to them since. A great fighter is a great fighter. If your undefeated you have the right to start where you left off.

The point im obviously making is that when excellent undefeated fighters return from hiatus you can only rate fighters that have bettered their achievments since they been gone above them. Ps if u think floyd/marquez was ever a legit fight uksab

Was it more or less legitimate than Ward/Smith? :think

more legit but a lightweight v a great welter is not much more competitive than ward smith. The score cards were probably the same in both. A shutout

Flip your 5 + 6 with 9 + 10. Big glaring weakness their favoring the less proven fighters.

And no, when an excellent undefeated fighter returns has not fight a live opponent in three years he does not automatically reclaim his spot. When Floyd returned from his 21 month hiatus he was coming off a win over a top 5 P4P (over)rated Ricky Hatton and took on a top 5 P4P JMM in a farce of catch weight bout. No matter what you think of these circumstances the quality of a Hatton win and a farcical JMM so greatly outstrip an E-Rod win and a farcical Paul Smith win that it doesn't really bare thinking about. Then bare in mind that BEFORE the E-Rod fight Ward had not fought in 14 months while in the 14 months prior to the Hatton fight Floyd had beaten Baldomir and De La Hoya.

A great lightweight vs a great welter has every opportunity to be more competitive than a great SMW against a SMW who is trying to crack the top 35.

I couldn't disagree more. Hatton was never a ranked welter and looked like utter dog dong the one time he had fought there when he got what many viewed as a gift decision against Collazo. So basically, Floyd fought 2 fights against guys who were not welterweights. They may have been "P4P' talents, but that is deceiving, because their accomplishments came from lower weight classes than where they faced Floyd. Marquez had never fought at 140, let alone 147, and Hatton looked absolutely terrible in his only prior bout at 147.

Floyd whopping on JMM would be similar to Ward whopping on Canelo.

Would Ward get more credit for beating Canelo than he did for beating Paul Smith?
