I know Jerry got the decision. The reason I ask is that someone posted here that he thought Middleton should have been declared the winner by a point. I didn't see the fight, that's why I asked.
No Jerry was made to work by a Larry who had Beaten Joe Bugner and was Ambitious, Jerry on a previous visit had Ko'd british Champ Jack Bodell in One Minute Flat ! so their was something of and expectation of further Fireworks from Jerry, but of course Larry never foolishly marched into Jerry like Jack did, he remained Mobile behind a good Jab, which meant Jerry had to go looking for him, as i recal their was not much in it at the half way stage, but Jerry was the stronger and although no fireworks this time, Jerry imposed himself on a tiring Larry in the last few rounds to win a Clear decision, I think it was the fact that Larry remained causiously competitive, that made him exceed many's expectations, and perhaps Jerry was in something of a flat mood, But Jerry won..And Larry survived.. Ron Lyle and Ken Norton later spelt out to Larry that he could forget being in the upper echelon of those 70's Heavy's, Jerry as we know had a real Roll-coaster of a career ahead of him..
Have never seen the fight , but remember listening to it on radio. The commentator thought Quarry won as did the papers the following day though Quarry was critciized for a lacklustre performance. I recall Quarry only won by a narrow margin.
WALTER BARTLEMAN (Evening Standard): After taking a worms" eye view and not missing one punch in the action, I believe that Middleton was flattered at such a close decision." QUARRY said after the fight that he knocked up his left hand the fourth round 'I was not as sharp as I would have liked”
Never saw or heard the fight but Larry M. obviously never had the tools to reach any contending elite level based on his career record. Not sure what his weakness was but it surely kept him out of ANY consideration of a Title fight... I'm sure his boxing prowess kept him on his feet against Jerry and Bugner never knocked anyone out that was worth anything. My $0.02
