Funny story about the barber. My friend had his head messed up by a white barber once, at the barber college, when we were in high school. Poor guy's hand was shaking from nervousness before he even started. He had obviously never cut a black person's hair before. He went in with the clippers like bzzt...then bzzt. I was like "man you need to get up out of that chair." My friend told him to stop then turned around and looked in the mirror and said "wtf have you done to my hair!" The barber was very apologetic. I felt sorry for the guy, honestly. I laughed at my friend the whole way home. He wound up getting it fixed at the well known black barber shop across town. But, the demand was so high, it took a few hours of waiting to get in the chair. Situations like this are why I learned to do it myself.

It's not strange Garcia gets his hair cut like that. He was raised in the inner city of Philly. He relates to black people, as a lot of Puerto Ricans do who grew up in the northeast. Not to mention, Puerto Ricans have African blood and heritage in them too. Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto who are native Puerto Ricans, have worn their hair like that, as well.

Yeah I got full blood PR cousins from back east who never did that, but when I thought about it I recall that some PR's did. I never thought about but it seems even more important for blacks to go to "their own" barbers than for others. There seems to be a lot more going on with their hair. I recall watching them cut each others while I is in the military, took forever. Not sure why but if they wanted it cut to like say a four guard, it seemed they were starting at an eight, and then hitting every single direction. Then starting the process over one guard lower (7, 6, 5 etc) until they got to the desired four, never understood all that.

Looks quite obvious that he gets it cut that way?

Yeah...it's important that the barber understands the hair type they are grooming. I've only had my hair cut by black barbers, since childhood. But, I've been cutting it myself, since I was 16...more out of necessity than anything else. I am not a licensed barber. But, the rationale behind starting with the higher guards is that a barber needs to get a feel for the direction a person hair grows. If they are doing a baldie, it doesn't matter...start with the 1 guard, then no guard, then a hot towel, then the razor. But, for fades and other styles, if you go in with too low of a guard you could leave plugs or bald spots, when the intent was to cut it to a certain length and get a nice gradual fade.

These days you actually see other ethnicities (asians, whites, etc) getting into cutting black people's hair. I guess that's the affect of acculturation, "hip hop culture" and this melting pot called America.
