100 rounds, please. Fritzie Zivic as referee. And a lifetime supply of beer and broads to the winner. I really like Bonavena, but I'd be supporting Galento, and I think he has the power to win through.
Bonavena would be, in his awkward way, a little too "slick" for Tony. Oscar was tough enough to withstand Joe Frazier for 25 rounds, and revealed more than just one dimension vs Chuvalo....I think he decisions Tony.
If Bonavena can battle toe to toe inside the pocket with Joe Frazier on two occasions without be stopped, then I think he can handle two ton Tony. I never saw the fascination with Galento. He was a crude brawler and albeit a tough one. But the guy didn't train seriously for fights, showed up looking like a beached whale, and beat a lot of mediocrities. Fighting dirty is what he's known for.
M. if Galento were alive today he would sue you for calling him a dirty fighter, no doubt...When he was fighting a reporter called Sir Galento a "dirty" fighter. Tony rightfully responded to this allegation saying " I am NOT a dirty fighter as I take two showers every day ". Case closed...
Bonavena was always in shape, Galento wasn't. That counts for a lot when trying to pick a winner. I'll take Oscar by a late stoppage.
I recall Galento seemed quite *****ly about that when Don Dunphy suggested he was a dirty fighter. Regardless, Bonavena was a level above Galento, better conditioned, just as tough and can match any rough stuff Tony tries. Bonavena by TKO.
He'd rough him up like Arturo Godoy did. But he hits harder than Arturo, so I like Oscar by mid-rounds stoppage in a gory battle.
Speaking of Arturo Godoy...One afternoon at Stillmans gym , the soon to be retired Arturo Godoy walked pass me inches away. His face had so many scars on it, due to his rugged style and compliments of a Mr Joe Louis... A real tough guy in a tough era...
I had a trainer who fought in the 50s-60s, before video. He said that many times he would go somewhere to fight and he had no idea about the opponent. He said the weigh in was the first time he'd see who he was going to fight. He said that if the guy he was going to fight was "mean looking", nose all over his face, scars around the eyes, he felt good. He said "everybody else had hit the guy, I will too." He said when he'd get worried is if the opponent was unmarked.
Ringo! He had more to his game and could actually box a bit as he proved against Chuvalo. Galento was a slow ,static mauler.
