Wow ! The Natural really said that ? I thought they got into MMA because they were wrestlers with a greater acumen for the total fight game... this is what I assumed by watching the last 15 years.

Most finishes in MMA fights, that I've watched, are the result of a stunning punch, any of the common boxing punches.. then followed up with a withering non stop combination of kicks, knees and hands. I think they call it MMA because all of the martial arts are used, including boxing.. If it goes to ground, you better know how to fight there too.. You could be great at any single discipline and be beat by someone that is just good at all of them..

Not sure if thats the reason.
But i do wish we would stop hearing and seeing comparisons between these two different but great combat sports.
    Mma win in mma
    Boxers win in boxing
Street fight who knows as both have aspects that do and dont work
Money is def in boxing and i feel MMA is not quite as popular as 5-7 years a go

You are right.. each would win in their own game.. nothing new there... But, the comparisons are always going to be there.. boxing is a martial art, just like the other disciplines. I have read that most of Bruce Lee's real fight KOs was the result of a lighting fast straight jab.. He figured the nearest weapon to the nearest vulnerable target was the way to go..or the way of the something.. What way was it...lol

More money in boxing... So if you have hand skills you will probably box.

If I take an average athelete and a great athlete and have them train for life in boxing... When they eventually fight each other the great athlete will win by a landslide most likely....

If I take the same two guys and have them train MMA, I would only favor the great athlete by a small margin...

Athletic ability matters less in MMA, I think strength is really important and there is more skill that can be taught to MMA fighters. Things like punching with speed and power cant really be explained, the kid will either be able to do it, or won't.

You couldn't be more wrong..wrestling itself takes more stamina than boxing, add in the kicks.submissions and so forth you need to be able to avoid takedown, able to do takedowns and overall be more mobile in a cage than a boxing ring.

"I trained in MMA and can tell you boxing over a long period in MMA is useless the wrestling and constant grabbing of the arms that take away a punchers range make the punches weak very fast, your arms become extremely heavy, you are using much more physical strength in MMA" David Haye

Being fluid in everything, Grappling,Judo, juijitsu, wrestling, sambo, etc ,strikes, knees, elbows, kicks, punches, ability to be able to get off the ground ,transition from striking to grappling being able to fluidly set up kicks and submissions, able to dodge everything takes more athletism than worrying about strictly punches with knowing a ref will seperate clinches.

All the tools you mentioned above are just that.. tools.. each is important, but to use them in a sustained and effective effort, requires a high degree of fighting I.Q... knowing when to use the right tool in every situation, depending on the opponents weakness and strengths. The fuel tank dictates the sustainability of the fighter's efforts and fighting I.Q ratio. I saw a gym sign that read, "the more you sweat, the less you bleed". My trainer once told me, fighting is 80% conditioning, and 20% skill. This is probably old stuff to most of you veterans in here. The young guns in here need to write that on their wall... I enjoy this discussion.. If I talk too much in the next 30 days ... it's because I want to get to 60 posts as soon as possible so I can enjoy the full features of this awesome site.. But, I hope I can add to discussions more than just numbers...
