Afetr he gave Lamotta sound beating Marshall said any of the Black Murderers Row would beat him as he was one of his easiest fights. When he returned home from his victory over LaMotta in Cleveland Lloyd told the West Coast fight fraternity that any one of the 'Black Murderers' Row' would have no problem beating the 'Bronx Bull' as it had been one of his easiest fights. Lloyd felt that there were several fighters on the West Coast, most notably Charley Burley and Eddie Booker, who would defeat LaMotta easily. It has been reported that Jake received one of the biggest beatings of his career the night he faced Marshall. His face was grotesquely swollen from the pounding it received from the fists of the California-based fighter. Despite beating nine out of the twelve world champions he faced (a list that includes the aforementioned Overlin and LaMotta, Ezzard Charles - by TKO and Joey Maxim - twice), Lloyd Marshall never got anywhere near a world title fight.
Marshall had some good wins for sure. Like a lot of good fighters he peaked during war when the titles were frozen. Later Don C0ckell knocked marshall out in one round.
WW2 goes a long way in explaining why so many good fighters of that era did not get title shots. Lloyd Marshall is an ATG.
Gotta admitt I've never been overly impressed watching films of Jake. I don't have him in my MW top 10
Yes the frozen titles goes a long way explaning the Black murderers row quite a bit. A lot of those guys built up a lot of seasoning fighting each other over and over. Treading water. With nothing at stake and with nowhere to go (since the titles were frozen) I often wonder if to stay busy a lot of these fights were friendly encounters, a "gee up" to use an old expression. It explains why Moore hated Bivins so much. Supposedly Bivins needlessly hurt somebody on the circuit who Moore and the others needed to fight in order to stay busy. And that caused a bitter rivalry between them.
Yes Lloyd Marshall is a phenomenal fighter :good At least jake had the ***** to get in the ring with him and take his beating like a man, unlike a lot of other white fighters of he era Think Zale or graziano would have gotten in the ring with Marshall? Lamotta was a true great
I have a Ring Magazine special issue interview with jake lamotta taken about 5-10 years ago, and he talked about how He wish he was given more credit for being the only white fighter of that era along with his friend joey maxim for taking on the top black fighters of there era. He also claims he feared no one and would have fought anyone at any time. Ill post the article, lamotta was fearless
Off the top of my head I'll go with these Champions Greb Monzon Hagler Robinson Steele Walker Hopkins Giargello Griffith Tiger I'm open to changes this is off the top of my head while I'm on break. I've only mentioned Champions
Just to stir things up Jake won the 9th and the 10th on the AP scorecards and returned to NYC claiming a KO was his had the bout gone a couple more rounds.
Iirc, was Lloyd Marshall the fighter who beat around 10/11? fighters who were either former champions, or would go on to be a champ? I remember reading an article about him a number of years ago, stating the title shot that never happened.
That's a good list Can't complain I think lamotta belongs but your list is nice except your glaring omission of ketchel
Besides a big punch I don't c anything about Ketchel that really impresses me. I'm sure I'm in the minority here but he just doesn't capture my attention.
No film of him at his best. look at who he beat at 160 though and how he beat them. Clearly he had more than just his power
Basing opinions of LaMotta on the films is deceptive as LaMotta was on the slide by the time he got his title shot. I have his home movies that came from Joey and he looks a lot more impressive as a young guy coming up.
