Not really huge on Cotto personally think Alvarez beats him and GGG within the next year but regarding Cotto specifically I see a lot of people saying he's ducking GGG or holding the title hostage how exactly. Just going off what we know. In 3 MW fight's you have Martinez, if your 1st fight in a division is the real Champ how's that a duck. To get better suited for the weight in his 2nd bout he took on Geale (a top 5 MW & GGG's best win) in a tune up. In his next bout he's facing Alvarez which is the biggest fight in boxing vs a guy with a better resume and accomplishments than GGG that's not a duck. When asked Cotto says the same thing GGG/fans say about facing Ward or Lara that's it's not yet worth the money only difference is 2/3 guys on paper Cotto has faced are more skilled and accomplished than the guy he's "ducking" and Cotto maintained he has no problem facing GGG after Alvarez if it's the biggest fight.(Cotto facing Alvarez or Mayweather over GGG isn't a duck as there better fighters.) Another point brought up is the cw, now while I'm not to big on cw Cotto is in his 4th division GGG is asking for cw in his 2nd how is one getting a pass. Lastly some point to the mandatory thing but get serious for a second Keith Thurmans mandatory is Andre Berto no one would say Thurman ducked Berto to fight Brook or Bradley. Also should Cotto beat Alvarez he'll have the best resume at MW a guy holding a title hostage shouldn't have the best resume in the division. Just because you think GGG may beat Cotto doesn't mean anything to what's actually going on.
The belt is hostage because Cotto essentially refuses to fight the next guy in line. He also refuses to fight at the traditional weight limit for the class, 160 lbs. This puts every poor fighter out there that needs money, in a position where they have to squeeze below their natural limit just to face Cotto, which should not happen. If he wants to fight fighters at 154 lbs, let him, but he has to do it at 154 weight class. You can't hold a belt at 160 and force your MW opponents to kill themselves making 155-157
All 3 of his fights being at a catchweight below 160 (159, 157, now 155) is a legitimate complaint. Him "not fighting the next guy in line" is less so. Those who spew that off at the mouth haven't studied up on their history and likely praise many great fighters without acknowledging their similar guilt of this scenario. I always wish the two best fighters in every division face each other every time out. But usually each division sees years-long gaps between such occurrences. It is what it is.
Ward(fighting catchweight tune ups) and Lara(fights on PBC) aren't at MW. Cotto holds the MW title. GGG is Cotto's mandatory. See the difference? After Canelo knocks Cotto out, he will be a MW as long as he has that belt. GGG will be his mandatory. Are you going to be one of those people who say it's not a duck if Canelo doesn't fight GGG next?
There's another thing with this. Of course it doesn't happen much that the #1 and 2 fight eachother, but in this case the #1 is actually his MANDATORY. And Cotto already made it clear that he's not planning to hoor the WBC rules in that matter.
he beat martinez and got the title, GREAT well done he took a lesser skilled opponent in geale, good test and a bit of a warm up opponent after his big win SURE, FINE but the way he talks about a possible fight with GGG just shows he has NO INTENTIONS of fighting him. im not to upset because we are getting canelo v cotto instead which i think is alot more competitive and entertaining, which will likely lead to canelo v ggg (give canelo credit the **** does not run from anyone)
lol@"*****s always excuse ducking"....what about ggg and ward? oh wait thats right ya cant duck a guy not in your division...silly me...i musta forgot
Martinez, Geale and Canelo is a good run of fights. Martinez was the champ, Geale was arguably Golovkin's best victory, Canelo is arguably the toughest fight out there for him. People want Golovkin to get a title shot but Cotto isn't holding the belt hostage, he's been a worthy champ. Well, there's the catch weight thing as well...
He's clearly ducking Golovkin just like Martinez did or at the very least putting the fight off until he has milked the title for as much as he can against Canelo. Golovkin is the clear number 1 and has been for quite some time now and it's not like it's a fight fans do not want. Fans on both sides want this fight, the WBC wants this fight but Cotto does not just yet. I get why he's chosen Canelo first, it makes far more financial sense. But once this fight is over with the pressure for the winner to face Golovkin will be huge, especially if Golovkin's PPV does well, because then the excuse that Golovkin isn't a big enough draw will no longer be valid.
By facing Geale AFTER Golovkin smashed him and then saying that Golovkin "isn't deserving". By not facing the man who THE WHOLE PLANET agrees on is the No.1 MW ON EARTH.
Martinez wasn't even half the guy he was for the Murray fight and ould have been beat off any good fighter that night, Mayweather would have stopped him easily and he isn't even aggressive these days, props to Cotto for having the ***** to go up but he had no choice to stick around the lower weights unless he wanted to fight Trout again (which he was obviously unmotivated for first time around). Geale was visibly drained and focused wholly on losing that extra weight, but he wasn't exactly a De La Hoya scarecrow and it was an impressive stoppage even if GGG had already done it. Canelo I can accept because it's a massive money spinner and a surefire entertaining duel. Cotto has a middleweight belt and is above 154 therefore he can stop whining how he's not a middleweight, he is expected to fight Golovkin, Mayweather has never been above 154 and Golovkin has never been below middleweight therefore there is no ducking rule for him or Pacquiao or whoever isn't above that.
Well, to be fair, this is all Sergio Martinez's fault. He completely ducked Golovkin for years. Yet, Martinez fans come up with the excuse that Golovkin wasn't relevant. You can thank them.
