Ok how would a rematch play out with Hearns having healthy legs ( Steward claims an enterage member rubbed down Hearns legs when he was out of the dressing room and that sapped Tommys legs ) and of course without him breaking his hand. Does a rematch end differently? Could Tommy out box him? Opinions
Agreed, Duran almost beat Hagler and officially SRL did, both using boxing skills, Hearns might be able to do the same. No way does Hearns have the chin to trade with Hagler.
This. Would Hearns be able to keep Hagler off him the whole fight, though? I'm not sure. Seems to me that Hagler especially didn't like Hearns at the time. Giving somebody like Hagler extra motivation to cave your face in is a bad idea.
I imagine Hagler coming out guns blazing again and Hearns obliging to do the same, which lead to him be ko'd once mor by The Marvelous One.
There is a school of thought that believes Tommy was forced to try and trade with Hagler the way he did because he lacked the strength to keep him off for 12 rounds.
I think he was forced to trade with Hagler because Hagler jumped on him on from the opening bell. Hagler would have known from the outset that his usual more conservative counter-punching game would not work against Hearns. The way to beat Hearns was to drag him into a war and KO him. Manny Steward asked before the fight, how is Marvin going to counter-punch Tommy? The answer was not to even try. Key consideration here is when this fight happens, as Hagler was reaching the end of the line by this point in his career. He was noticeably slowing down and considered retiring after Mugabi. Did he have another war left in him? I think Hearns probably would get KO'd again. His chin just wasn't reliable enough and he was too much of a warrior to box cautiously for an entire fight.
A more extended, gradual, methodical beat down tko for Hagler in a rematch, not the exciting, spectacular showing of the original.
That rubdown story is the BIGGEST PILE OF HORSESH!T from Steward I ever heard of:-( Hagler couldn't stand Hearns, and truthfully I wish they would have fought again, because HAGLER would have torn his head off again.. Hearns didn't have the legs, chin, or physical durability to compete with Hagler PERIOD:deal
No. Hearn's wasn't durable enough to beat Hagler. Hagler's style was all wrong for him, plus Hagler could take his best shot. If Hearns tried to move and box in a rematch he would certainly last longer than 3 rounds, but Hagler would get to him sooner or later.
