    My oath he was.

Excellent quality footage provided particularly his go around with Alabama Kid. Wild stuff.

Nah unfortunately not, its just 20 seconds or so somebody recorded on screen from a Doc, finding that documentary would give it to us in better quality though

Richard's looks excellent on film ,always looking to bang that right hand home. It's a real pity he didn't get more international fights.

The Old Mongoose must have loved Australia back in the day...I remember reading how he told people that when he was making weight for fights, he had learnt from the Aboriginals to chew the meat he had in his mouth and swallow the juices and spit the rest out. Mr Moore is one of my favourite boxers of all time and I'm an Aussie fight fan. The longevity of his career is absolutely amazing...Also as a youngster I was told that Ron Richards was one of Australia's greatest fighters.

T, is it possible to post that footage of Carrol and Jimmy Leto once more ? And I recall a photo of Jimmy Leto and Tommy Jones together, leaving the USA for Australia in the 1930s. Jimmy Leto was a helluva WW and one tough looking hombre ?
Tommy Jones as I posted was a stablemate of JH Lewis the great
LH champion who as a boy sparred with me in the apartment of his trainer who lived next door to our family.Every night I would go next door, spar with Jones and a few other boxers and eat my salad and olive oil. Still do it to this day many moons later...:hi:

Leto was a tough looking guy, wouldnt want to cross him
I put the Leto and Jones links in the Ray Miller thread under my reply to you, the Jones one is quite short but the Leto fight is in good quality and a decent length

Is this the pic your remembering?

T, this is one of the photos I saw of Jimmy Leto and Tommy Jones. The other one was a closeup of Jimmy Leto and Tommy Jones alone before their trip to Australia. Tommy Jones lost to Leto [most everyone did], but they became good friends. Leto was one scary looking welterweight good enough to beat Charley Burley and I believe Cocoa Kid...What a fight it would have been between Jimmy Leto and Carmen Basillio ?:good

Gus Lesnevich was one tough dude fighting in a VERY TOUGH era of lightheavyweights, such as Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles, Jimmy Bivins,
Harold Johnson, Freddie Mills, Lloyd Marshall, Joey Maxim etc. Gus could HIT and was a very rugged LH for sure. As a young MW he took on the GREAT Freddie Steele who stopped Gus, but Lesnevich gained experience and soon later on became a LH champion...One of his claims to fame was when
he took on Billy Fox who "stopped" Jake LaMotta previously in their controversial fight. Well Lesnevich flattened Fox twice and Billy Fox was never the same...Please compare the LHs of the above with the LHs today with the notable exception of Kovalev. Ouch...

Ah yes, Freddie Mills... how could today's sissy LHs even hope to have a chance against someone as brilliant as that?

Harvey was at the end of the trail. Its a good job we now have 4 ropes with tapes down them, those ropes were pitiful and dangerous.
Mills got away with some rabbit punches there didn't he?
I love the way the commentator tells you what 's going to happen just in case you don't know the result!

Video links are dead. If anyone still has Richards vs Alabama Kid: I'd love to have that. Not only for the fight itself but for the AK's extended family it's a real loss to no longer be able to pull up the clip now. Used to have one. Content protected or link a dud, is all that comes up now :(
