How many distractions and problems in Tysons life in 1990 led to the Douglas k.o

I for one aren't sympathetic towards him. I just think his lifestyle started catching up with him at an early age. We're talking about whether these "distractions" effected his performance in the ring

 

Cus being around or even if Kevin Rooney was still Tyson's trainer would have translated to a better fight record for Tyson.

Mike wasn't a two-fisted-one-man army, his success and performance in the ring relied on people who knew the style, who knew him and wasn't afraid of pointing out his mistakes between rounds and during training.

The talk about distractions and women is nothing more than for a headline moral angle for Tyson/successful-black-fighter detractors as it gives them an excuse to put him down.

It happened to Jack Johnson, it happened to Sonny Liston, tolerance & boxing politics has not really progressed since 1908 has it?

 

The Douglas fight was such a one sided ass kicking I have serious doubts Tyson would have prevailed even if he had the 3 Amigos, Cus, Rooney and Atlas in his corner.

The nuthuggers like to make the point that Tyson looked **** poor in his first fight without Rooney against Douglas yet conveniently don't mention that Tyson looked his frightening best the very next fight against Williams. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Douglas had Tyson's number, anything else is just an excuse.

 

This might've been mentioned in another thread but at the time Tyson was champion - gangster rap became popular. Hell, I'm white and raised in the suburbs but that music had some sweet riffs, great beats and some deep bass that pumped me up before games and fights. The opponent was the enemy and that music made you seek and destroy the opposition. The image was everywhere, and to someone born and raised on the streets it gave you a sense of entitlement and power.

I agree with that a bit. I don’t think Tyson was at his best for Douglas but as a fan I do realise he would have had his hands full even with Rooney in his corner. I could easily see Douglas out pointing a prime Mike. But to sway things the other way a little, he did show he could hurt Douglas, which is not insignificant. With the lead up I don’t think the Williams fight showed much but its an interesting question, at least Bruno showed us Mike was a bit rusty after the year or so off.

I think with Tyson, taking a middle ground is more sensible in my opinion. You get the fanatics that are unrealistic concerning his greatness, then the haters that become ridiculous as it is so clear they hate the man, I can’t debate with either of those groups or take them very seriously.

I see Tyson’s faults as well as was he was great at, I don’t think he can be omitted from the term “sometimes a fighter has your number”, I believe there are a few greats that had the qualities required to nullify Mike. But when it comes down to it, he was a great fighter imo. I would have liked to see a Douglas rematch but my theory is it wouldn’t mean much as Tyson would obliterate him, Buster wouldn’t pull that performance out again, it was a one time thing, and possibly a performance Mike would never overcome.

 

I can hardly make sense of what's going on in this thread because of the amount of people I've got on ignore.
