Who will be the next US mainstream boxing star after Mayweather retires?

Amir Imam, he's got it all. After he beats Lucas M's ass and get on Crawford he will be well on his way. He has charisma, he's nice looking, he has a smooth silky style of boxing, he talks **** and backs it up, he has a killer instinct and never fails to put on an action packed show.

 

A win by a young guy over a faded Pac or May would make them Hector Camacho or Terry Norris famous at least though.

 

Canelo is the obvious answer for now but a lot of things can happen.

Just reiterating... I fervently believe Canelo will never become a mainstream boxing star until he learns english.

I think lots of fighters do social media. The thing is, I dont think it helps a ton. Social media is typically a reflection, and while memes and news can spread via it - and people think in those terms regarding it, in reality its the exception not the norm. May-Pac was big on social media because May-Pac was big.

People arent going to follow a fighter or pay attention on social media unless they are interested in the first place. Any impact social media has is going to be mostly due to fans talking about a fighter a lot, not anything the fighter does there.

The best way to get popular is the same as it always was, put on frequent excellent performances in front of as many real fans as possible. People who actually go to the fights and see them live become more invested, and ergo more likely to talk about said fighter on social media and elsewhere.

Its the same in almost any good marketing strategy that doesnt involve carpet bombing with a megaton advertising budget. First build a core following, because its that core following that actually does most of your promotion. Word of mouth is and always has been the most cost effective means of advertising.

 

Yep, Sergio Martinez threw away truck loads of cash not learning the language. Canelo has the Mexican audience which buys a lot of the pay per views but until he can go on the talk show circuit to advertise his fights he'll never be big with white people the way that De La Hoya was. Chavez Sr. was a great fighter but I don't think he ever learned English, so even though he holds the record for highest attended boxing match when he fought Haugen in Mexico City, his biggest payday was five or six million when he fought De La Hoya. Makes me wonder if Morales or Barrera ever learned English and if they could have made more money.

 

Cinnamon for sure, if he learns some damn Ingles. Other than that Thurman, but, he needs to take the two brits out first. And Crawford who looks to be the goods and has some tasteful swag.

 

I think Ward could manage it if he just decided to accept less money per fight, and climbed into the ring as often as possible. If he had 4 fights in the next year versus vaguely top15-25 types and ended them early like he did Smith he would be back on the map.

Or maybe 3 and culminate with a bigger fight. If he had already done that then an upcoming GGG fight wouldnt even be a question IMO. I mean, he signed with Roc in January and has only fought once since. He should have fought thrice already, and be looking for a major bout to top the year... at least if he wanted to get back on the map.
