Thing is, he's not getting in on Monzon as easily as that. Carlos was tall, rangey and knew how to use that length. If GGG moves in on him he's got that jab & right hand to deal with first. But I do like Golovkin's bodypunching and he does a lot of things very well. We need to see him versus better opposition before making leap of faith type calls against a consensus top 5 all time middleweight though. At this juncture I think it's a brave call to say he beats Monzon, let alone stops him.
Monzon and GGG are both beasts and rare talents. It depends how much nostalgia you put in your thought and how much reality and statistics, which version of Monzon you are referring to and so on. For example in this video, Monzon looks very beatable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXivXNvb780
GGG stops Monzon via body shots. Monzon doesn't have the power or skills to compete with GGG, the ultimate mw
What's going on here. I like golovkin a lot but come on. He hasn't even beaten a b level pro yet and we have people saying he could be a legend in monzon. Monzon beat up top fighters over 15 rounds all the time. He didn't lose a fight in his last god knows how many fights. And he was a bigger middleweight too. If you could create that fight right now I'd go monzon by late stoppage. Who knows I might change my mind in three years but I doubt it
Carlos Monzon is an ATG MW. Depending on how you rate other great MW's of the past such as Robinson, Greb, Walker, Ketchel, Hagler, etc., Monzon is at worst one of the 5 greatest 160 LB fighters in the history of the sport and arguably one of the 3 best fighters of the 1970's alongside Muhammad ALi and Roberto Duran. Gennady Golovkin's best wins up to this point are Daniel Geale, Martin Murray and Curtis Stevens. People can keep stating "just wait a couple years," but the last time I checked GGG is almost in his mid 30's. Time is definitely not on his side, and neither am I in this hypothetical H2H matchup with the greatest Argentinian fighter in the history of the sport.
That was in his second year as a pro when Monzon had 12 pro fights. His opponent Felipe Cambeiro was 37-9 at that time. Tough task for any young fighter. Monzon won a rematch 1 year later by dec and inbetween that time he had 13 fights (crazy schedule). Felipe was never stopped in all his 61 fights.
