No he didn't.... he overpowered him in the 12th. The majority of the first 11 rounds he cut off the ring brilliantly, countered the counter puncher brilliantly, feinted the old man and set traps for him, controlled the pace and range with amazing ring generalship with his effective use of the jab to the body and up top and mixed in combinations which were set up by his jab and fought a thoroughly dominant very cerebral match against a master boxer.
Hopkins vs. Ward sounds as fun as having a colonoscopy without anesthesia. No way they'd bog down any card meant to sell reasonably well with that.
Really then why didn't Hopkins let his hands go if he wasn't being overpowered by a bigger, stronger, younger man who scrambled his brains in the very 1st rd? I'm glad you can describe what you saw Kovalev doing in the ring, but you should also focus on what his opponent was doing, which was absolutely nothing. It's easy to look good when your opponent is 50 yrs old and doing nothing to win.
Hmm... For some reason it kind of intrigues me, it would probably be **** but rarely do you get to see two fighters with as high ring-IQ as those two in the same ring.
So you think the physical advantages Kovalev held over a 50 yr old blown up MW weren't a factor? This myth that Kovalev 'outboxed' Hopkins is ridiculous. You can't outbox a guy that isn't throwing any punches. Hopkins tasted the power in the first round and wanted nothing to do with it, spent the rest of the fight in survival mode
The same reason that people have a tendency to stop throwing punches against Hopkins, Rigo, Ward and Floyd.
Keep telling yourself that trying to convince yourself that Kovalev doesn't have the skill level to compete and when he makes Ward look average, I'm sure you'll have an excuse for that too.
Hopkins himself admitted post match I believe that Kovalev is a really good boxer. Him not throwing punches isn't just because of the power, because power can be easily neutralized, but when you have a guy who can hit hard and can land consistently most importantly, that's when it's bad.
What ever happened to Golovkin first, Kovalev second? BHAHAH! :rofl Joy boys falling on their face again.
