Why do people say Klitschko would get respect if he was American?

Larry Holmes's reign is very similar to Wladimir Klitschko.

    Both:

    1. Both dominant champions
      Both relied on jabs
Both were family men; led ''boring'' personalities
Both fought in a weaker era of heavyweights

Despite the similarities, Holmes wasn't respected until after he retired. He didn't gain the respect Mike Tyson did during his reign.

The people who say that probably discriminate through race and nationality themselves and don't get plenty of people can see beyond such labels unlike themselves.

Because he would get respect if he was American.

It's the truth, he would be a household name, starring in movies, all over saturday night talkshows etc, held up as a shining example of everything that is good about the US.

Hardly anyone would question his competition because he'd be an American hero.

Hell they'd probably want him to run for President.

American hates you if you have no personality, regardless if you are american or not.

Anyone with no controversy or drama surrounding then would never be a star in the states EVER.

The vast majority of people who think so like Klitschko primarily for his skin colour. They cannot grasp that there are people who simply dislike Wladimir based on his boxing style. If the Klitschkos were black some of their present fans definetly would not be their fans.
Your example of Holmes is right. A similar case could be made for Ward.
All great fighters but just not appealing to bloodthirsty casual sport fans unlike people like Pacman, GGG, Froch and so on.

He's got a personality, he's a big shot in his home country. They have a very different culture; had he grown up here I believe he'd be a huge star. Too many ifs and buts though.

This is bull**** considering Larry Holmes's competition was fiercely criticized; in addition to the media not giving him credit.

To be honest I don't think being white means anything anymore. American fight fan will cheer black American fighters against white European one.

If anything, America wants a black hope.

I'd cheer a white American HW champ over someone else from another country for the most part. Unless I stylistically didn't like the guy.

Wlad I think is more of a personality issue, if he was a brash **** talker, he'd be more popular in the U.S.. We like that for better or worse

    :smoke

Watch the movie "Great White Hype"... it's on
youtube... Gives a visual to this thread!!

Millions of Americans have salivated for a white American
heavyweight champion and they all got KTFO brutally...
Once Eastern Block fighters took over about
12 years ago most Americans stopped watching
and went back to football tailgating and boozing...

    They felt inferior and cheated...

Like how soccer got popular in the USA for a
few minutes when the USA was winning...
soon as they lost no-one here cared about
soccer and went back to USA only football
    were Americans always win!!

    :yep
