I've met him twice in recent years and he was great company both times I've read his book. He swore by underwater swimming as a way to get fit for fights. Doing two lengths of the pool under water without coming up for air time and time again to get fit and increase lung capacity. I think the loss to Duran affected him mentally for decades and after he retired I seem to remember from the book he went to US to find Duran and wanted a rematch outside the ring. Something like that. He's had a few issues with drink outside the ring as well but hopefully those are behind him. Someone says in the thread he was very under rated. He may have been in the UK but not in US. Until recent years he remained the only British boxer ever selected for the US Boxing Hall of Fame over there.
Makes a nice change to read a thread without people abusing a boxer, a trainer or each other on here.
Brilliant fighter, had the lot! Without a shadow of a doubt one of the greatest fighters from the UK to ever lace up a pair of gloves.
Had he been born 30 years later, he'd of been far more appreciated and certainly would of been financially sound. Another fantastic boxer/fighter who gets nowhere near the recognition he should have. Legend.
There was an interview with him on the radio (2nd June it was as i was driving back from airport so i remember). He was chatting away for about half an hour about boxing and then started to break down. He was asked about the drink and he was really honest. Said it had cost him everything, money and relationships. I think he had split with his long term partner through it. He was crying during the interview it was really gripping stuff. Not sure what station it was on but it was brilliant, even though it was so sad. Worth trying to find it if you are a fan.
So many great fighters have struggled outside of the ring. Drink, drugs, depression. Absolutely tragic.
I have him as the 2nd best Uk fighter of all tine 1 joe calzaghe 2 ken buchanan 3 jimmy wilde 4 ted kid lewis 5 carl froch ( I don't include canadians)
Ive no idea why he isnt a bigger name? Maybe cause hes scottish not english? Its funny how eubank and benn are well known by casuals but theyve never heard of buchanan, they didnt have half the ability of buchanan Why is this living legend never on sky sports or boxnation??,?
