What weights would you be happy to see GGG v Canelo/ Cotto winner between 160-155?

I would PREFER full limit of 160, as I also think titles being on the line for CW's devalues them some (if its possible to devalue them more than they are already).

I would accept the fight down to as low a catch weight as GGG can make safely, which I suspect to be around 156-157.

The worst thing that could happen is that GGG weighs in looking like death at 155 then we see something akin to Pac - DLH and are subjected to "what would have happend at XXX weight" threads for the rest of time.

The fight should be at 160. Intra-divisional catchweight fights don't make sense to me.

So basically the worst thing that could happen to GGG is what happened to Canelo vs Floyd. (Having to drain himself to make an absurd catchweight because the other fighter is too scared to fight him at the normal weight) Lets also remember that GGG is on record saying that he can get down to 154 to make a fight with Floyd Mayweather. So I ask you, if GGG can make 154 for Floyd, then why can’t he make 158 for Canelo?

I think you see the double standard here. For what it’s worth, I agree with you that there shouldn’t be any catch weights. LMW title fights should be at 154...MW fights should be at 160... period. The problem is the ripple affect that Floyd - Canelo at 152 caused. It caused a catchweight trend in boxing. Now we hear all this talk about how if the winner of Canelo vs Cotto doesn’t fight GGG at 160, they will strip that person of the title and give it to GGG? The sanctioning bodies could just as easily make Cotto vs Canelo for the 154 lb titles, and allow Cotto to keep his MW title, in the event that he were to lose to Canelo he would still have his MW title.

It’s like the sanctioning bodies are holding the fact that Cotto is having catch weight MW title fights against BOTH Canelo and Cotto, but yet giving Floyd a complete pass for his CW fight vs Canelo. Floyd was able to hold on to the 154 lb titles all that time since the Canelo fight, never having to defend it. But the Cotto / Canelo winner has to fight GGG at 160 or else that belt will be given to GGG? Something just doesn’t add up here.

SRR, Lamotta....all them classic guys used to take catchweight fights all the time, but they were stay busy fights against contenders in the weight class above. That way they could stay active, not kill themselves to make weight, get paid, and retain their title either way. Sorta like Pavlik vs Hopkins. I really see no problem with those types of catchweight fights.

However, if you want to win the title (or defend it) in any weight class, it should be at the limit IMO. Catchweight title fights make no sense to me whatsoever. There is no 152lb title. Nor 155, 164 or 172.

I feel the same way about title eliminators. A guy shouldn't be able to become the mandatory contender at welterweight, for example, by having a contracted weight of 142 or something.

I wonder when somebody is going to try to impose a contracted weight limit at heavyweight?

If Canelo wants to fight GGG for the WBC MW Title, they both should fight within the 160 Level, no catch weight etc... everybody on his own weight, like it is normal in boxing!

You don't think Canelo and Cotto beat GGG at 160?

Whilst in general terms I agree that catch weights are more often than not a bad thing, few things I'd say:

I meant worst thing to me as a fan of boxing not necessarily from the POV of GGG. Again using the example of Pac - Oscar it allows the casuals and fan boys to falsely inflate their chosen fighters standing. (I was/am a Pac fan but thats the truth)

I didn't say that making 154 for Canelo or for Floyd or anyone or that it was or wasn't ok. My opinion is fighters shouldn't weaken themselves significantly to make a big money fight, but if they choose to do so thats on them.

You seem to have a big chip on your shoulder about the Floyd Canelo CW. That was 2 lbs, which is objectively worse than 5 lbs (155 cw for MW fight) either in real terms or as a percentage. I don't think it made such a huge difference, Floyd was just to good for him, but whatever, there will always be a seed of doubt, thats what catchweights allow IMO.

My thing is whilst I don't like catchweights and think it is essentially admitting a lack of self belief (you are effectively saying to your opponent, I'm not sure I am good enough to beat you unless I weaken you) I would criticise the person who chose to weaken themselves.

I blame Oscar for the Pac fiasco. I blame Segio for fighting Cotto knowing his knee was fvcked, I (would) blame Canelo for accepting the CW. I blame Dawson for proposing a cw vs Ward. And I would blame GGG if he fights anyone at a weight that makes him a less effective fighter.

They all chose to chase the cash and if in doing so they accepted something which screwed their chances of winning. They get the sh!t for that, not the other guy.

Fully agree the trend for titles at catchweights is bad, not sure you can say it all started with Floyd though. Leonard was the worst example. :-(

I really dont care for this fight, both Canelo and Cotto have made a fool of themselves. Whoever wins should relinquish his title and let Golovkin unify the division. They are horrible people for holding the middleweight championship hostage.

Golovkin should collect all middleweight belts, break Hopkins record, then move up. You guys still dont understand, money is nice, but it isnt everything in life. Real boxing fans appreciate what Golovkin, Kovalev and Klitschko are doing.

Whatever weight they make it at. Bottom line is they negotiated and made it happen as opposed to not making it happen. 3G nor his fans can complain since supposedly he kills them at whatever weight, and he himself said he makes 154 comfortably.

Also, people need to quit focusing on a belt just to have something to complain about. Seriously, people are focusing on an inanimate object (the belt) and complaining there is not enough respect for it. Talk about being backward, belts honor people, not the other way around.
