The thing about duran is, he's a huge idol for a lotta people...i mean, is some dude was to tell me muhammad ali wasn't that great or srl was overrated or rjj and floyd didn't belong in the all time pfp top 10, i might think they a fukcin moron...so, i understand your reaction. the thing is, if you look at the barkley fight for example...did duran really "win" that fight or was it a gift decision? many observers felt barkley was way ahead at the time duran dropped him and barkley came back strong after the kd and deserved the decision...

a lotta people also see that duran thumbed davey moore in the eye...besides, moore with 11 or 12 fights at the time was still very inexperienced, so beating him doesn't really carry a lot of weight. as for the srl fight, duran beat a very diminished version of srl...that is to say, he beat a version of srl who had given up all his natural advantages to engage in a slugfest....still, many people had srl outslugging the slugger...the ny times for example called srl the winner of that fight. the scoring of that fight was very controversial. when srl reverted to his natural style, it was no contest. duran failed against hearns, hagler, benitez, laing, simms and really didn't standout above lw.

now, at lw, his comp was relatively weak...i know it makes sense to build up esteban dejesus to make duran's wins over him look good...but dejesus was a run of the mill counterpuncher with some power...really nothing special. lampkin basically an above ordinary fighter with lateral movement and some athleticism. duran struggled with those guys just like he struggled with anybody who could move and give him counterpunching...that's a fact of duran's career. look at the duran-dejesus II rematch...dejesus nearly tore duran's head off...dejesus was using duran for target practice in the first half of that fight. just basic counterpunching and lateral movement. same thing srl did to him in the rematches....as for arguello, i didn't say he would beat duran, but arguello would be the best fighter duran ever fought at lw...styles make fights. corrales was a great counterpuncher with very fast hands, fluid combos and explosive power...duran would be walking into corrales firepower...bad news for duran. kostya, pryor and them guys are so far better than ANYBODY duran ever beat at lw and so far better than the guys duran LOST to, it's very easy to envision them beating him or knocking him out.

 

Duran beat a prime Sugar Ray Leonard despite being a naturally smaller man. That win alone makes him an ATG, not even considering his lightweight resume. He also fought a close fight with Hagler at middleweight. Smh at some people. :roll:

 

when it comes to comparisons with ssm, the difference is, ssm beat dlh with dlh fighting at the best of is ability, while duran got a controverisial decision against a srl who was using about 50% of his ability...ssm lost to guys like winky and forrest while duran lost to benitez and heanrs and srl. winky and forrest are pretty much on the same level as benitez and hearns. duran lost to simms and laing...ssm lost a VERY controversial decision to cotto. cotto is far greater than simms and laing. duran beat palomino, cuevas, barkley and moore...shane beat guys like margarito, mayorga, collazo, fernando vargas, oscar (in the rematch), etc...so, based on their performances above lw, i consider ssm to be a more accomplished fighter.

at lw, i think ssm fought solid comp, maybe not better than duran's but certainly ssm was just as dominant and could have continued to reign at lw for as long as he wanted. style-wise, duran was made to order for a guy like shane. shane would have dropped duran like dejesus did, but instead of wilting down the stretch like dejesus, because dejesus was a drug addict, shane would have put a hurting on duran and probably stopped him in the middle rounds or slowed down down enough to dominate.

 

first of all, duran was not a naturally smaller man...duran at the time had outgrown the lw division and was a legit ww. second he got a controversial decision over a srl who was fighting at less than full capability. when srl fought his normal style duran was not even in the picture.

why do people always say the second fight was an easy win, yes Duran quit but up to that round it was aclose fight its not like he was losing every round. And SRL is on record saying he rushed to fight him quickly because he knew he was blown up

That's debatable. I'm sure he'd pick one or the other but l don't see it as a forgone conclusion that the would pick Benny, especially head to head.

 

a prime shane at lw was once considered the best fighter in the world pfp...yeah, he would have stopped duran.

also, imo, shane got robbed in the cotto fight and was over the hill in the pac fight.

mayweather is a far, far superior fighter to duran at any weight class including lw...

 

c'mon dude...close fight?..srl was clearly in control. duran quit because he wasn't able to impose himself like the first fight where srl deliberately fought duran's fight and duran got frusrated cause he wasn't able to hold his own.
