No shame in retiring out of fear of Ward.

No, Hopkins was the man at Light Heavyweight in 2008, as the rankings prove.

He was the highest rated Light Heavyweight and ranked #4 P4P from 2007 - he lost the top spot to Calzaghe but remained the division's second highest ranked fighter and kept his p4p spot despite the defeat.

Dawson was ranked 5th in the division in 2007 and third best Light Heavyweight behind Calzaghe and Hopkins in 2008. Dawson wasn't rated the top Light Heavyweight until after Calzaghe retired.

    True.

Froch posted that about 1 or 2 weeks before his official retirement and about 14 months after his last fight.

Just imagine what people would be saying now if Calzaghe had of made his last 2 fights against the Commonwealth champ. Frochs fights with Groves were of a similar level to Calzaghes with Starie, just Groves pushed Froch massively and Starie was beaten.
I guess its all down to different eras and when a division is more or less known and popular. Its an interesting debate

Had Calzaghe beaten Froch who then goes on to beat Pascal, Taylor, Dirrell, Abraham, Kessler, Johnson, Bute, Groves, then that would have been possibly Calzaghe's best win.

Groves resume up until the Froch defeats looks better than David Starie's IMO.

Starie had a decent win over Clinton Woods, but lost to Dean Francis

Groves beaten the likes of Degale, Johnson, and knocked out guys like Adamu and Paul Smith.

Groves could possibly go down as one of the best British fighters to never win a title. I would still pick Groves to beat Abraham though.

calzaghe beat kessler who went on to beat froch, so I can't agree and I don't think beating a green British champ in froch would have been greater at that time than wins over eubank Hopkins kessler lacy Mitchell brewer Reid Woodhall or several others not mentioned and don't think it would have ever been a win greater than the kessler Hopkins or eubank wins.
It's a different eta and I know you wouldn't have watched starie live and likely haven't seen the Francis fight or knew Francis in his prime. I would have favoured starie over groves but do rate groves. Starve also beat baker which was a good win at the time, but as said you would have to have been watching at the time yo appreciate.
You note groves resume and his win over a very faded Johnson who was a fighter woods split fights with that starie beat when established. If you note adamu for groves when he beat him you should note staries win over baker

It never ceases to amaze me when people make this comparison or one similar.

Firstly, Calzaghe beat Kessler in a manner that wrecked him. Watch the fight again. Froch had two wars because that's the style of fighter he was, but he didn't even begin to school Kessler in the way Joe did.

Secondly, Hopkins. Calzaghe beat him fair and square in his back yard. What more is there to say? Froch simply doesn't have that type of win on his record.

Finally, if they'd ever got in the ring together and you pay any attention to the old adage of "Styles make fights" then Joe was Carl's worst nightmare. Look what happened against Ward. The handspeed and boxing prowess of Calzaghe would have see Froch absorb more punches than the "80,000 fans I KO'd George Groves in front of at Wembley".
