I know in the old days left handed fighters often had to convert to orthodox to get fights. But I can't help but think it severely limited guys like Frazier and ****ey. I've always wondered how good these guys might have been had they fought from their natural southpaw stance. Bottom line is, I think its a lot easier to train your weaker hand to throw hooks and jabs then it is to train it to throw from the back. Very few fighters in history could throw their weak hand effectively from the back. Converting gives you a great left hook but if the other fighter can avoid it you are in trouble without a backhand power shot.
I agree with this. I'm a southie myself. Just to brag a little imo I can generate quite a lot of snap and power to my southpaw jab and hook. But when I switch stance my right hand becomes pretty much useless power-wise, and the balance seems always a bit off when throwing it. OTH the orthodox left side does work excellently.
Floyd is a natural southpaw i believe and i recall his dad or uncle saying that's what made him what he is today he would of lost as an southie.
i guess its the same for both stances. When you first go to the gym your lead hook and jab are rubbish and it takes a long time for it to develop. So I'm sure a right cross from an orthodox fighter (who is a natural.southpaw) can be developed the same way.
My right hand is virtually non-existent either way. :-(( I'm a natural orthodox, I have a good jab and left hook, but my right cross is useless. Trying to box as a southpaw, my jab is less potent and I am less comfortable with it, my right hook is laughably weak and I am constantly off-balance, but my left cross is dynamite.
Anyone else think the cursing filter on this forum is a bit overboard? You can't even say Gerry ****ey's name or Riddic Bowe.
